If by "not complex pdfs" you mean simple txt-files that somebody converted to pdf then yes, the 770 can handle those very well. *applauds*

It's perfect for reading not complex pdfs like books. I use fbreader and pdftohtml. Fbreader is a real ebook reader with library, bookmarks, large fonts, portrait mode...
From de 770 command line:
$ pdftohtml -noframes pdffile.pdf
$ gzip pdffile.html
And finally open using fbreader

Well, if default pdf viewer was able to cut white margins at left and right sides, i would find it quite usable: https://maemo.org/bugzilla/show_bug.cgi?id=761 (feel free to vote for this feature request)
