I would second that. I think the best thing about Mediabox is that it is being continuously developed, and we can offer up suggestions for improvements.

Having said that, I do believe that there is a need for something that is simply an audio player. I for one, would like a simple MP3 player without the bells and whistles of a video player and photo viewer. And I hope that doing that would make the software faster and less resource consuming. Maybe these elements of the software can become separate components, installed separately, just like the YouTube plugin is, for example.

I personally do not use Mediabox for the singular reason that there is not way to get back to the Album I am playing from the track I am playing, in a single click. If that feature were to be brought back, I would switch back. But regardless, I think Mediabox is a great software .

As far as I remember, doesn't xmms install on Maemo? This would fit your requirements.

For the record, I have the same issue on my Linux desktop as well. I have amaroK for a media center application, media library and the like, but to play something down and dirty, there is xmms, audacious and the like.

What game? I do this for fun and have no intention of stopping my work. And some people really seem to love it. I'm certainly not a good UI designer, but the user community is very helpful and has good ideas.

YouAMP is great but not the kind of user interface I want to use in car for playing music.

It's simple IMHO. It's a slim core with a bunch of plugins. It's getting simpler with each release (in terms of program architecture).

Yes, but they all exist because, apparently, the original media player from Nokia was not flashy enough or didn't provide some features, or was too restricted in terms of filetypes it can play.

They both do their job very well. But some people like it flashy, or at least finger-friendly.
In terms of RAM consumption, YouAMP is not much better than MediaBox. Indexes require space.

the idea of adding plugins is the way to go

first and foremost a music player

then add whatever plugins

video,youtube,worldtv,equaliser etc

no mistaking media box is great

but a really excellent music player along the lines of youamp would win a lot of people over

And many people are happy to hear that.

Incidentally, when I first came across MediaBox, I was looking for a standalone music player. I tried all the other music players that I found (all of which are fine projects, by the way), but I liked MediaBox the best. It's easy to use and looks great. For me, it usually is a standalone music player, and the other things it can do don't interfere with that. My daughter has begun using the video player a lot, though, and I have begun using the youtube plugin.

I think you are.

wtf... MediaBox is a media player. For me it's the one and only (except watching non-converted videos). It gets a lot of feedback, improvement ideas, bug reports, patches etc. from community and is getting better every release. And thanking Martion for his great job is the first thing to do, to understand how it's hard to stop development of your project and unethical to ask anybody do it is the second one.

"it is too late in the game."... Well, don't use Amarok, it is too late in the game. Don't use Rhythmbox, it is too late in the game. Don't use MPlayer, it is too late in the game. Don't use XMMS, it is too late in the game. Don't use VLC, it is too late in the game. It is not too late until anybody needs and uses it.

Of course, it's IMO

@pycage
Is the development paused at the moment? I haven't found SVN updates and packages' updates for quite a long time, so can you, please, share a bit what's going on? I have some new suggestions and ideas as usual

Don't worry, although developement got a bit slow lately, it's going on.
There will be SVN updates again when stuff gets functional. I'm currently experimenting with the list view and how to make it more responsive and smoother and easier to use.
On the other hand, I'm doing a few plugins for an alternative remote-control-driven UI for use on a HTPC. Some of these things may be used on Maemo as well, eventually.

If you have new suggestions and ideas, please tell me.

As long as you are still taking requests, I have two

(a) A screen that scrolls through only the tracks in one album, and can be navigated to from the now playing screen ( maybe click the album link)

(b) A setting that allows me to land directly on the Albums page on startup

As long as you are taking requests, I have a couple myself:
  • A way to track forward/back within a single track. Hitting the progress bar accurately while driving is impossible and/or dangerous.
  • A way to get between the playlist and the album/artist selection (or video) page without going through the menu. I want to select my audio (or video) files and hit a play button that will play the entire playlist.
  • A bookmark function. As I said in an earlier post, much of what I listen to is podcasts. The Linux Link Tech Show is 2 - 2 1/2 hrs. Linux Outlaws is at least an hour, etc. It would be nice if, when I arrive a work, I can store a bookmark within the file and go back to that point when I am ready to leave, instead of searching through the entire file to figure out where I was. Barring that, how about a way to punch in how far into the track to jump to?

Thanks, pycage, for all of your work. For me, mediabox has emerged as the best of breed all around media player for the NIT.
