What does S60 have to do with the Ovi Store? Believe me, its not Symbian controlled. It won't comingle the Maemo Apps with Symbian apps. It detects the device and only shows apps compatible with it. Ovi Store on the N900 is a no brainer, and if its not there, its a mistake.

I'm afraid you've missed my point. I don't want Ovi Store on Maemo not because I think it's going to show me Symbian applications, but because I don't want S60 and Ovi managers and engineers who don't know the first thing about open source or Linux (both philosophically and technically) to have control of the Application Distribution on Maemo.

What I want is to implement our own payment and authorization system for integration within the Application Manager (we can look at branding it with Ovi later). That way the community has control over how it's done. The same community who gets open source (both philosophically and technically) and is actually qualified to implement such a system the right way.

A monetization system like Ovi is a no brainer, Ovi Store is not.

Why are you so sure Ovi and S60 Managers don't know Linux or FOSS? I think you underestimate the level of education of people you may or not know. I think the Ovi people have more experience creating an app market than we do at this point. Once the Nokia Money thing takes off, the payment thing is solved. I'm a supporter of the Ovi store, and it'll take off once its ubiquitous.

Perhaps, but I think you need to use a Maemo device and see how the App Manager and Repositories work.

I understand that, but moving them to Ovi makes it easier for consumers and furthers the brand, Nokia's biggest asset.

I think this community wants so much from Nokia but is willing to do so little to help them. Sad. NIT users don't care about the OVi initiative, and want the top mobile device in history for under $400. That's unreasonable. This doesn't have to be about protectionism. No one is taking Maemo away from the community, but realize this was done to further push maemo and Qt into the mainstream, along with ovi.

Because I speak from experience. I've dealt with them first-hand and seen the negative effects those involved with Maemo have already had on the platform.

I know them, I've dealt with them, and it's not a purely technical issue, but also a strongly philosophical one. S60 people simply do not get open source. That ignorance can, and already has, severely damage the platform.

Right, that's why myself and dozens of others have put hundreds and thousands of hours into the platform and the community over the past 4 years.

Actually no. Let me explain what Maemo Select is: Maemo Select is a place where we can promote selected apps and other valuable content. Nokia's one and only place to distribute apps is the OVI Store. Maemo Select will take you to maemo.org for downloads of community applications. And Maemo Select will point you to Ovi Store for commercial-grade content. We just need to see and wait if and when that Ovi Store on the N900 is up and running.

Don't forget that the S60 people are basically dead, and the new blood are all FOSS folks like David Wood, et al. And I don't think Maemo5 looks like its been severely damaged, but improved over the original. jmho. But I'm just a newb here. I'm learnig.
