"Digital audio cable"? No, I was talking analog. Without analog, the only way a computer can play audio cds is by ripping them. Which is what mplayer cdda:// would do. So I don't know why you're actively against ripping them.

(sorry I don't know the first thing about "digital audio cables", never used them nor did need to use them)

Either way, you did not say why mplayer cdda:// failed.

I like this guy's attitude!

If anything, I'd like to see if this works. I'd LOVE to be able to read CDs so I can rip them with my N8xx tablet instead of having to depend on a laptop. Tried it awhile back on the tablet with K3b, but no luck (I'm not technical enough!)

Has anyone managed to play an audio cd on their tablet, and if so, how?
Am not sure what your requirement is really. I had cdvd-tools.deb from penguinbait installed on my n800 http://tablethacker.com/wp/?p=194
I compiled cdtools annd cdparanoia in scratchbox, installed on device and can play the audiocd from the usb drive audio out to my external speakers using cdplay from cdtools.
Can sample the whole cd and save individual tracks in wav format using cdparanoia.
6 tracks (610mb) took around 9 minutes.

tekplay, you listen to the music from your drive's audio-out, right? You plug the speakers directly into the drive? I think vectis' external drive has something extra, however, as he claims he can listen to the CD through his PC's speakers.... Unless I misunderstand?

Perhaps his drive has a sound card built-in?

My CD collection is all ripped in OGG format...is this supported?

Edit : Just reached that point in the manual - the answer is no...mighty strange for a linux platform....
