LEDs have run times in the hundred of thousands of hours. I don't think you'll need to worry about that. As long as you stay within their voltage range. You can under volt them, but don't over volt them.
That's only if they are sufficiently heatsinked and not being driven above the rated current. Considering these are intended to be a flash, i wouldn't be surprised if
-1- they are not well heat-sinked
-2- the driver is over-driving them (briefly)

If the current level is not adjustable then there may be no way to turn them on for long periods without destroying them.

@shadowjk: are you referring to white LEDs in general, or the LEDs in a Nokia device?

Just attach one of these guys to your finger and you'll be fine: http://http://www.photonlight.com/Ph...flashlight.htm

It won't drain your N900 battery, it won't wear out the onboard LED, and it's cheap (get the original for half the price and nix the on/off switch). I still don't know how strong a single (or dual) LED would fair for video recording. I suppose for shorter distances and in really low light it would make the impossible possible.

Case closed.

Constant voltage LED's last that long- not flash type. Flash type are powered through a capacitive circuit that builds enough charge to activate the diode for a very short time. In order to provide the lumens needed, it is fast and a sustained flash would result in quick termination of the LED (it would fry).

if it is a variable circuit, it could have two modes (sustained light and flash). Was not aware the E71 had one. Maybe the N900 does too, but I still would not use it for that too much if any. Good way to either burn the LEDs out and not have flash, or wait weeks to get it repaired.

Supported flashlight modes as seen by Camera Application through GDigicam are described here: http://maemo.gitorious.org/fremantle...ager.h#line313

One can do its own camera using libgdigicam available on the platform.

I hope it's just a software issue because i am really really counting on using the leds as light while video recording for a personal project.

Have you checked the menu in video recording mode? They use a bulb as symbol for that.
Really, the N95? I have the N95 8Gb, and I can't find a setting to record with the light on. How do you do it?

I can't tell you, i've just seen it. I'm a filmmaker and i do projects with small cameras (mobile included). One day i went to a workshop where we could only use our mobile and a guy on my team was using a N95 with light on. I think he was using another software to record.

For the rest, i confirm. I own a N97, N96 and a 5800 Xpress music and they all use the leds as light. The N86,N85 also (used them for a project)

I think it's only a software issue on the N900 because the camera hardware is similar to the N97.

I remember reading that there was a way round it with the N95 with a program that was run through Python.

Ah yes, there's something sparked in the back of my mind now regarding 3rd party software to do it. I wouldn't be a fan of that though, in case it did some damage.
