Soooo.... sorry if the answer was obvious in the thread but I didn't get it. Do I need to add an app to the N900 to have the feature of adding ringtones to contacts or is that something I need to wait for a firmware update. Also, if there is an app out there that will allow me to do that, what is the name of it?

Custom ringotones are a must. Next update pls... I always go with motorbike and ringotones help recognize who's calling from hearphones

I agree. And I don't want an app. I want something that doesn't sit atop the OS. I want something that is a part of the OS. Hoping a dev will step up and add it. I want custom ringers and Conversation alerts for each contact.
