I don't want to hijack the thread or dampen efforts to get Shazam to the N900, but maybe it would be a good idea to make a call for developers to make a Shazam equivalent ? The Maemo community has some mighty talented developers, if a critical mass of (technical) ideas is achieved, I think it is not at all impossible to have something distinctly Maemo-ish and not depend on the commercial interests of Shazam.

Attila77 has a point: Perhaps add an app with Jamendo and/or other similar services integrated? I like how I can search Jamendo , play songs, torrent them (legally!), and even donate to the artist in Rhythmbox under GNOME.
Nothing against Shazam, which I hadn't heard of and may or may not use with an n900 if ported, but I do think the other idea has merit.

I doubt that the community would be able to provide the backend server infrastructure needed to run a service like Shazam...

And we don't need to reinvent the wheel every time just to be "open" and "commercial interest" free

And why is that ? Nokia or publishers might very well get interested in sponsoring infrastructure if they are presented with a working solution, just as they are sponsoring the infrastructure for maemo.org and many other things.

And we don't need to reinvent the wheel every time just to be "open" and "commercial interest" free
So, how do you explain this Maemo thing at all ? We could be all just as well running Windows Mobile by your rationale.
