Lack of multi-touch is not going to be a deal-breaker for me, but pinch-and-zoom is really intuitive and convenient, and it allows a lot of other new ways to interact with the device. It's not the only way, but it is a really neat way.

But like I said, that's not going to be a deal breaker. Over-reliance on the stylus might be, though. But if new apps are designed for fingers, then I guess I'd really need to take a look at what kind of apps are already available like that.

I've actually done that, but it is a bit tricky. (And I'm scared as hell that I'll drop it.)

I guess different uses and different apps have different input requirements. For some things, you need to stop and slide out the keyboard/get out the stylus, whereas the real on-the-go apps need to be controllable with a single thumb.

An interesting thing of resistive screens is that the amount of pressure exerted can be measured and the application can react to it. I think Xournal used that particular characteristic.

Having used a few capacitive screens, I am not at all convinced that it is the "preferred" way to go. I personally have found them less accurate than resistive. There were times I tried to touch a link or a specific point in text and it just wouldn't do it correctly - quite frustrating - really wanted to use my finger nail or a stylus. Pinch & zoom seems cool, but is it really better than a double tap or spiral? The single finger kinetics demo'd on the n900 videos so far make this particular resistive screen seem like a different creature from anything previous. Hope that's the case.

In the video demos of the N900 and N900 apps, I havent once seen any user use the stylus on any of the apps. They have all used fingers in all the demos I have seen (by Nokia and independant bloggers and developers).

The Maemo 5 UI has been redesigned to support and be fringer-friendly (as against the Maemo 4). So stylus should be the least of the worries.
You should be concerned about app availability and how the device works for YOU.

I think the best thing to do might be to have a look at some of the UI videos and 'getting started' clips on YouTube, and see what you think; most of the basics are pretty finger input heavy.

Here's a nice comparison chart between the two:

I haven't had any problems with inaccuracy, although I have occasionally had an app completely ignore my clicks. I doubt that was because of the screen, though. More likely flakeyness of the OS or the app.

Double tap sounds very useful, but probably not as accurate in how much zoom you want as pinch & zoom. Spiral sounds a bit odd and non-intuitive to me, but I haven't tried it yet.

I hope you're right.

In either case, in a few years or less, we will be looking at other technologies like projected capactive screens, hybrids, infrareds, etc. Then we will be wondering why the n990 still has a capactive screen. Who knows.
