Really, you had to ask?

I didn't get a message from god... I guess Kirk Cameron was right all along.

Can you explain how you would prove something is significant scientifically? I can't think of a single method.

Science explains the mathematical relationship between measurable quantities. It doesn't provide any method for measuring the importance of these relationships. If there's no way of measuring it, then in scientific terms there's no such thing as significance or importance.

If you look at statistical significance for example, there will be some arbitrary threshold above which something is considered significant, but there is no explanation for how this threshold is determined. And even then what they really mean is something is X times rarer than Y, but that doesn't mean it's significant in a philosophical sense.

*sigh*

You're trolling us with this, right? You can't possibly be serious. Science has absolutely *nothing* directly to do with math, measurement or significance.

Starting to think I need to spend more time away from TMO... it's clearly gone off a cliff.

I'm being accused of trolling when you're saying science has nothing to do with mathematics?

Could you give me one scientific theory which does not depend on empirical evidence that is processed mathematically?

And yes, science has nothing to do with significance, which is what my original post said. Science tells us nothing about significance, so anyone who claims to know the meaning of life is being unscientific.

People who say science tells us the meaning of life are misusing the word science.

Thank you for presenting your argument in the form of a link, and here is what that link actually says:

Based on observations of a phenomenon, a scientist may generate a model. This is an attempt to describe or depict the phenomenon in terms of a logical physical or mathematical representation.

The heart of the scientific method is to observe the physical world, record empirical data numerically in some way and then use those numbers to see whether your theory is supported or not.

Anything which fails to use empirical data at some stage is unscientific. String Theory was heavily criticised for this reason.

Um, Gravity

Your own bolded text supports Z-jays argument.

...of a logical physical or mathematical representation
Why don't we all give it a break before someone uses a dang slide rule to prove somethin'.

That's pretty broad statement.

I agree, if you mean life from a point of view of single sentient being and meaning of this individuals existence. I certainly don't know the meaning of my own personal existence. i do know that it's not signifanct.

Then again, I'm also a molecular biologist. In biology the phoenomenon known as life that exist in nature certainly has a meaning. Life is information that encodes chemical systems which undergo evolution under natural selection and has the capability to produce copies of itself. It's meaning is to replicate this information. Life has been doing this very sucessfully since the first pre-cellular replicators emerged roughly 4 billion years ago.

Hey thanks for introducing an irrelevant attack into this thread. That's just what TMO needed today.

You are probably misunderstanding the phrase "God-fearing".

Please show more respect.
