As far as features go, these are some concerns that I have that I'm afraid wont be addressed:
- Lack of lower video quality selection (Ex: 640x480@30fps, 320x240@30fps, etc)
I'm not gonna edit full quality files on this phone, nor am I going to upload the resulting files via 3G. I want something like 320x240@15fps as an option... I've never owned any device that was capable of recording video but didn't offer a way to decrease quality for reduced file size.

Since I've used every Nseries flagship device, I'll say this is a step back, but probably typical of first gen firmware. The N95 8gb and N97 both had similar performance on the initial builds. Video looked noisy, too, even in good light.
All in all, its still better than 90% of what's out there.
And it doesn't seem relevant to me to compare the N900 to 90% of what is out there. 90% of what out there are feature phones with low resolution cameras. To me the relevant comparison is to other flagship devices.
From what I've seen, it feels more like the N900 is shipping with a camera application and imaging performance that is not up to the standards of previous N series devices. I guess that's fine if you see the N900 as an extension of the previous Nokia internet tablets, but now with a phone. But if you see the N900 as the new flagship N series device, then to me it falls short. It seems like the camera wasn't a priority or was rushed out the door. So I'm a bit disappointed.

While digging for standard icons for various services for Shepherd I ran into a few camera icons suggesting some (currently disabled) resolutions:
The video resolutions are 800x480, 640x480 and 320x240
The camera resolutions are 5, 3.5 (wide), 3 and 1.3 megapixels
Doesn't mean much, but hey, at least we know somebody in Nokia was/is at some point thinking about extra resolutions

Ok, I'm going to come over here with my post...
I think it is a software issue.
The N900's video recording seems, to my untrained eye, to have actually gotten worse from the early firmware I first tried at the beginning of September. It has always struggled on scenes with complex motion, like sunlight in water, but in the Summit firmware, it started to struggle even with basic panning.
Does anyone have good example videos from other Nokia camera phones, like the digital N86 zoom example one posted in another thread?
I thought I noticed a small bit of struggle with the N86's video on the train driving away and the panning... Nothing like the N900's difficulties, but still, noticeable to me.
I'm just wondering if this is something Nokia has struggled with on other cameraphones...

Okay. My 8 year old digital camera that records in 320x240 looks better overall than N900's recording due to smooth 30fps framerate with no dropped frames.
My N95 8GB seems to be better also. My wife's LG phone is better. I'm sure N900 can do better. IMO, it all can be fixed by software. But I guess it has to be up to Nokia to fix it if they can be bothered.

Took some video today experience some frames dropping. Is there anything I can do to reduce dropping frames? Do you think later firmwares will fix this or is it hardware?

With the N900 being Nokia new flag ship phone you would think they would have slapped the n86 cam on the N900 just to turn more heads to the maemo platform. I mean you build a kick *** phone that blows all other phones out the water for at least a year and a half. Why not stay on top with a better cam. Since owning the N900 i've used my laptop less why not make me use my dig cam less while you at it. Really selling the N900 as the ultimate phone. Nokia ia headed back on top and the n86 cam on the N900 would have kept it on track IMO

Another question about video and pictures. Does the camera load up/activate faster then the n95? Does the n900 take less time to process the image? I'm curious if the faster processor helps.
