I hope this isn't off topic, but is there something to sync your google bookmarks at the moment with the N900?
If not we should try and incorp that with this project or not ?

Would it be a better use of our time to work out solid SyncML support? That would be a stepping stone to Google, iSync, etc.

EDIT:

D'oh... Didn't finish reading the thread.

Google SyncML seems to be only for contacts. At least it says so here:

Just follow the active sync instructions and don't bother to try email just yet.

Okay, I'm following the instructions and all I get is "server timed out" for a week now. I just want to sync my google calendar.

Everyone who's gotten this to work on these forums has at least mentioned the "server timed out" problem, but then say something generic like "but after I got around that problem it synced my calendar fine".

Can SOMEONE please tell me what I'm doing wrong? I don't want to sync multiple calendars, or contacts, or email. Just one google calendar.

Sorry to sound desperate, but this is how I'm starting to feel...

Here are my current MfE settings:

Email address: <my google account login email address>
Username: <my google account login email address>
Password: <my google account password>
Domain: leave empty

Exchange Server: m.google.com
Secure Connection: Yes
Conneciton port: 443

Sync: Calendar only

Ok, I needed to update this last thread. I tried the settings, and things worked OK, but for me the mail was the bigger issue. In the end I set up and used email.nokia.com and it works quite well.

This is for mail only, and it seems that it is a demo account (perhaps good enough to work until a good "regular" solution is worked out.) It seems they are a pay service, but there is no indication of how long the demo is going to last, and what the costs are. Anyway, just thought I would update.

cddiede,

I was not entirely sure how to set it up, I tried your settings, and it worked the first time for me. Perhaps you had some latency in your network connection, that can certainly give issues. So, I guess I don't know what to say other than your settings seem to be correct. Hope it helps.

You could switch to either Weave Sync (Mozilla add-on) or Xmarks (works both on Mozilla and Chrome). IMO they are much better than Google Bookmarks.

For example: Weave Sync (and Xmarks) lets you securely take your bookmarks, history, tabs and passwords on any computer you use.

I started getting that time out error afterwards, har har. It seems if you just try again, sometimes waiting a while, it'll eventually go through?

Calendar sync via MfE does not work for me :-(

BTW, there are three things to avoid when implementing contacts sync:
1) duplicates. as we probably do have similar contacts on the device and on the google, it is likely to happen and there should be some quite smart check
2) dropped fields. contacts are never in 100% sync as google does not support some contact fields. so it requires special care not to affect device-side contacts
3) random kills. even if 2) is implemented properly, there is little that can be worse than handling conflicts with removing server contact and replacing it with client one. why? because it leads to automatic drop of gtalk and latitude friends lists.

I suffered from all 3 while syncing by seven.com ;-)

I have exactly the same settings and same error. Syncing worked fine until i decided to import my complete calendar from my Palm. I have dates from 1999 in my calendar. I have them all in my N900 now but i can't sync anymore.

When i imported my Palm calendar items for testing a couple of times, at a certain moment, google complained that i had my maximum items imported for that day. Maybe there's a limit somewhere? Is there a place where better logging of the communication is stored? I checked /var/log but not much there.

And as a strange side effect, the desktop widget doesn't show any upcoming events anymore. Do you have that too?

And people honestly argue with phones like Android and Iphone supporting right out of the box?

I sold my iphone the other day, but honestly, this should have been one of the first things ironed out... I just ordered my N900 device regardless, but it makes me shake my head when these kinds of things don't work.

"Hey, my N900 is great, but...I can sync Gmail without having to do a bunch of extra steps." - Great! I want three more. It's not much of a selling point.
