ya windows will refuse to make directory with "." in the front so try this instead:

1. Open xterminal in N900
2. mkdir -p MyDocs/.vids (assuming you are in /home/user/ dir)
3. mv /path/of/video_file.ext /home/user/MyDocs/.vids/ (/path/of/ is the path of video file "video_file.ext" and ".ext" is the type of video file e.g: .avi, .mp4 etc.)

Words in italics are commands. It might prompt you asking "continue?" or something just type y for yes and n for no.

I used the edit /home/user/.config/tracker/tracker.cfg solution a while back.

It works well. You can still access the folders via the standard file manager and can start vids using that.

If you want to view images you can just move the folder (using file manager) containing the images into another folder and everything will be rescanned automatically and viewable via the image viewer as normal.

Move the image folder back into your "do not scan/watch folder" and all the images disappear immediatly from the image viewer.

excuse my ignorance, i've had a go at editing the tracker.cfg which is fine, just not sure of the syntax to use to allow me to ignore a folder on my memory card
