SiB works with Mplayer for accessing files and playing them in Mplayer.

Update:

I see you guy's point. Mplayer is cpu hungry. That and pulseaudio are at about 60% cpu usage. About as cpu hungry as a Flash video, but plays better

How do you test what the default player is doing in the terminal, since I see now way to get out of full screen? Only exits the player.
ssh in from another computer and run top.

Probably not, unless you're comfortable with command-line stuff.

Yes, but:

1. Need the SiB UI to make it easy to access files and not have to type to get access.

2. When you go to the "dark side" and activate testing or the "devel" repositiories, do not update any apps that pop up saying there are updates- those are not ready for release and could mess your N900 up. (Maybe both are in devel- can not remember).

3. Disable both repositories as soon as you install the apps.

4. Remember to not update ANY apps when you see the update notices as long as those two repostiories are active.

After playing MANY videos last night:

1. None of the ghosting or artifacts that some vids had
2. None of the stuttering
3. None of the dropped frames that some videos consistantly had
4. Almost same amount work as Archos 5 (impressive)

The one issue is that Mplayer uses about 20% more CPU than the default player, which may explain why more work (takes time to create new codecs that are optimized).

Added:

The great news is that Mplayer at least confirms that the N900 can play video just as well as the Archos 5. Wild in a good way We now have a device that plays video as good as the Archos 5, but has far better sound quality than the Archos 5- ironic.

Because they want to use the gstreamer framework and also the DSP codecs for HW accel. I love mplayer thought, hope someone ports the smplayer front-end.

Aren't kmplayer and gmplayer already in repos?

SiB works fine for basic file access and interface for Mplayer.

Aren't those two players mainly for audio?

Rushmore,

Since you seem to have a good grip on the subject... could you please put together a newbie guide of installing and using Mplayer ?

Many thanks

You guys can get KMplayer from testing as well. Then go to the menu and pick "select player" and choose mplayer.

All set with a GUI and a shortcut.

Thanks for the KMplayer tip LS!

As far as me having a "grip", that is like me pretending to be a doctor amongst real doctors here Seriously.

As far as Mplayer and avoiding a command typing interface for playing vids, you have at least two other options so:

1. Install Mplayer
2. Install either SiB or KMplayer to get UI level access to playing files.

I feel dirty now.
