I'd just be happy if the built in media player read UTF-8 tags properly :>

+1 for sorting/display by folder. It's how I've always stored my music, and can't be arsed re-tagging every single file just so I can find it on my N900...

sorting by folders or sorting through tags, either way is fine. Sorting through tags give you more control but it might throw you off as you can't actually see the tags but you can view folders. To see complete tags you will have to use some sort of software for example mp3Tag

Sorting through folders means you have to work very hard to make sure names are correct of folders and sub folders and correct files are sitting in them. Sorting through tags just means you have to work equally hard to make sure tags are correctly placed on songs. So either way there is work involved. Sorting through tags also means you can just throw the file in n900 and it will know what to do with it, how to place it where to place it unlike in folders where user has to make sure.

I personally prefer tags cause of just that extra control of placing album art etc. unlike in folder option where you will have to place an image file. A touch less memory is required through tags. Integration of album art also means album art will be hard coded in a way to display, no ifs and buts involved afterwards.

we tried to tackle this issue here guys, not sure you'd find it helpful or not there's almost no material on how the n900 sorts and looks at tags, we tried to piece it together... kinda failed.

Artist -> Album -> Title -> Album Art

keep everything empty e.g. comments, composer etc.

i use it this way:

1. i start the usb storage mode of the n900
2. copy the music to the .sounds folder (each album in a own folder)
each folder has a own m3u playlist
i make the playlists with a simple dos command
"dir *.mp3 /b >playlist.m3u"

this works fine for me. i dont care about mp3 tags

the n900 will organize music based on how your tags are set up, that is all. I just wish we knew what the n900 was looking at in the metadata, and why Various Artist albums don't show individual artists!

its a bit confusing. When we say Album Artist, its artist for the whole album and when we say Artist, thats an artist for an individual song e.g

Santana / Shaman
Feels like Fire Dido (Album Art)

Album Artist / Album
Title (1) Artist (1) Album Art
Title (2) Artist (2)

this is how it should be but this is not whats happening.

artist / album
title1 album art
title2

this is how n900 is sorting. So album artist tag is down the drain, its not supported and hence the answer to your question. No way to show multiple artists for a song thats why various artists album don't show individual artists. It can but it will also create an album for each song primarily.
