I know it's not pretty, but I'm really irritated by all those unhelpful responses I see everywhere this question pops up (and I've really done some research on this matter). That's not what the OP, nor I, wanted. And yes, I want public access. I have a router that shares my internet connection around in my apartment and it works great. But my IP covers the whole town with its Wi-Fi access points, and I just need PPPoE connection to use it. It would be a huge difference to have fast and cheap internet access all around. The thing that hurts the most is that it's just a matter of (relatively simple) software. And it's already working for ages on various GNU/Linux distros. So I'm saddened that it's not available for Maemo. I tried using pppoeconf Debian ARM package, but it won't install.

It took forever, but I got PPPoE on a WiFi connection working on my n900. Roughly here are the steps. I will make a better walkthrough when I get the time
1. Install the power kernel with pppoe support
2. Install ppp
3. Edit the ppp config files to add your creds, use pppoe, and dns

4. write a script to configure wlan0 up and associated with the appropriate network
5. write a script that calls pppd with the correct username (you need to specify it both in the config files and on the command line)
6. write a script that clobbers /etc/resolv.conf with /etc/ppp/resolv.conf (note this prob isn't the right way to do this because the N900 uses dnsmasq but I haven't figured out how to do it the right way)
7. install the libicd-network-null as detailed at the bottom of this link http://wiki.maemo.org/N900_USB_networking
You need to do this for the maemo applications to play nice with the interface

Why people always respond to this with "get a router" or "lol it doesnt have ethernet" is just beyond me. I've had the same issue for some time now and I haven't resolved it yet thanks to such people, because every thread about it everywhere on the net looks the same. First for Symbian, now for Maemo. For the not-making-sense part - it's possible to use PPPoE via WLAN. Guess you didn't know that. In fact, many wireless providers around here use that system. Maybe that's not the best solution, but that's what they're using, and that's what I would like to be able to use. So a router won't solve my problems (I have one already, but I don't intend to carry it around with me), and I don't want to plug ethernet cable in my N900. So a very simple question - does anyone know how to setup PPPoE on Maemo? I used "pppoeconf" and "pon/poff" on Ubuntu and expected it to be present here also, but it isn't. If anyone knows how to to install it, or some alternative, info would be appreciated.

Please consider this a feature request - it would be useful to connect via PPPoE over WiFi without having to carry around a router (with rechargeable battery!). It's easy to do on a laptop (has been standard in XP for a long time; recent Ubuntu can do it via NetworkManager as well), and should be so easy on the N900 too. I'm running a small local wireless ISP in a rural area, and I can tell you that PPPoE over WiFi is quite a common setup. Lack of native PPPoE support in the N900 kernel is no big problem, as PPPoE can run completely in user space (kernel mode still offers better performance, but let's make a first step and improve it later).
