Sure, but that doesn't make me want to use Android more. I'd rather not have to operate up in a pseudo-Java layer and deal with the complete lack of a package management system and no access to various tried and true (and untrue) libraries.

I suppose what I should have said is:

I think I'll stick with a real *nix user space stack
which Android devices try very hard not to provide.

This is the way I did it, and more info here.

Go tmobile.com, home page>plan>all plans>prepaid plan or here

I went to get a $20 phone came with a prepaid sim card or you can order just the prepaid sim card for $10 (the card itself is about $7). I got a very good Nokia old phone with BT support, talks to my N800, but I never make any real use of it yet. I went to the tmobile.com web site, activated my phone, chose plan pay as you go (talk minutes are more expensive than the other plan, but there is no per day charge, so one can sit on it till being use on talk plan), never talk to any CSR. Some people posted that talking to the CSR and activated a smart phone like N900 will cost more. I did it all online without having talking to anybody.

I sit on it for several weeks, till I need to go out of town, I then switched from talk plan to data plan 1$ a day, unlimited data, it counts by the hour, midnight to midnight, you allow to make one change a day, more than one change, it will cost 1$ per change. And when I am back in town, I switch back to talk plan to avoid the 1$ charge.

It is not fast enough to use it for skype, but otherwise, it does everything like a 56kb modem suppose to do, slow, but will get you online.

The tmobile page is SO CONFUSING, even the CSR would NOT understand what to do. I once called up to ask for help, the CSR insisted sidekick plan ONLY works on sidekick phone and NOTHING ELSE and please DO NOT WASTE his breadth to keep explain it! what a jerk!

anyhow, I am using it quite happy about it, not necessary the best way to get online, but its a way that fits my current budget.

I can not get what other people have been able to get online, maybe I dont understand or I have not tried hard enough, it works with some hiccup or you can have the real plan, I guess, something like 30$ a mo for the phone and $10 a month for the data plan.

In the above thread, if you know how to setup your own proxy, you can get 3G going, much faster than 2G. I am still learning how to get a home proxy works .....

Hope this helps,

bun
