BTW: Does anyone know about the differences between Gizmo for N800 and Gizmo for 770? The N800-version supports a 2nd SIP-account, the 770-version doesn't. But I could install the N800-version on a 770 without any problems. Why do they offer two versions for download if they seem to work independent of the hardware? Are there any known problems with the N800-version on a 770 that I simply didn't encounter yet? (I installed it only yesterday.)

Maybe they just didn't take the time to test it, or don't want to support it, or...
It's probably more resource-hungry than the 770 version, and takes longer to launch on the 770 maybe. There are a few blank seconds when your correspondent takes the call until he actually hears you -- due, apparently, to the 770's CPU "catching up". Apart from that everything seems to work OK (especially the secondary SIP account, yay :-)

The one thing i'm afraid of: Gizmo seems to check for available upgrades when I log in. It could be possible that a future version of the N800-client will suddenly stop working on the 770 or, even worse, could install something that ruins the rest of the device.

Hopefully, if it ever finds one, it will ask for permission to install it ? :-)

I'm sure it will; it will, however, most certainly not say "You're running the N800-Version on a 770, which is something we never supported. We now it worked until now, but the new version will set your batteries on fire if you install it on the 770. Are you really sure you want to proceed?"

The point is that even when I'm asked if I want to upgrade, I will not know if it's safe. It's simply strange to have the two versions without knowing why there are 2 versions.

My only two complaints:
1) There is an initial few second delay before you can hear anyone speak but I am told by the Gizmo devs that this is due to hardware speed limitations on the 770 slowing down the initial connection setup and there is not much that can be done about it.
I don't think this delay - that is a real drawback for current usage - is due to hardware limitation. Why the delay during the connection establishment (which is a simple network exchange) should be longer than the RTP session that needs a lot of computation to convert voice into bits ?

Remembering having used Minisip when it was available (for OS2005) this delay didn't exist.
This delay (nearly 10 seconds) makes it unusable with a real callee who thinks it's a wrong call.
At the opposite the hangup is immediate.

I have an answer : the signalisation session (SIP) isn't established directly between the client (the tablet in our case) and my VoIP provider but goes through a SIP server at sipphone (198.65.166.131: northamerica.sipphone.com).
What I can observe is a REGISTER with my SIP operator through northamerica.
This "piggyback" REGISTER sometimes failed (the reason is "wrong password" whereas the credentials have not changed within).
I need to shut down Gizmo to retrieve a normal behaviour.
Fortunately the credentials are not published onto the SIP session (the authentication is challenge/response based) but I'd like to know WHY my SIP session isn't established DIRECTLY with my provider (remember that the Gizmo interface asks for the SIP server, so why not using it ?).
Bug, feature or advertising purpose ?

Did you really observe that delay shrinks with the n800 ?

Well, obviously you just answer "No" until you've read here that someone else has done it and it works...
That was an easy one. What do I win ? :-)

Well, the answer would be one of

1) There will be one version of Gizmo in the future for both devices. It is only for marketing purposes that they now offer a "N800"-version because everybody talks about N800. Don't worry.
2) They will continue to develop separate versions for each of the 2 devices. It is not safe, in the long run, to use the wrong version.

...but for now the "wrong" version works, and has something important the "right" one doesn't...
Free as in beer, huh ? :-)

What's the real difference between both platforms ?
As far as I know it's the same ABI (the main difference between OS2005 and OS2006) but everything that works on the 770 should work on the 800.
The opposite is not true as one could easily imagine that the lbiraries and the common API (gtk, Hildon, etc) have evolved.
More, what could, technically speaking, prevent us to install OS2007 onto a 770 ?
Apart from the disk space needed ...
