gmail.com works fairly well in a browser

I've also used evolution in LXDE which was surprisingly usable!

Mutt works pretty well on the N900, yes - I've got it compiled with IMAP support. I keep meaning to look into packaging it properly.

Ya really ought to do it...Mutt's the best email client ever.

Not since 3.7.3-1maemo2 actually, I just packaged it to scratch my itch but I can't do much with it codewise. Since then borealid took over (and added gpg support), he just forgot to update the Maintainer: field. There's currently a maemo-optify bug that seems to block development, but hopefully it will pick up soon.

BTW, vitb suggested a garage project to collect patches, hildonise it etc which I think is a great idea (as the upstream project isn't interested).

Mutt sucks less, of course :-)

I think I'm leaning towards a combination of mutt + offlineimap personally (might as well use all that storage for something). Jebba's repository might also have some other interesting stuff.

Maybe I'm lucky - I don't know - but I use Gmail through Nokia Messaging and my emails are instantly pushed to my n900.

It works WAY faster than setting up gmail itself in Modest.

Modest's biggest problem, to me, is not being able to search my emails. Aside from that, it works really well for me. It's way faster than my Blackberry Curve's email client ever was.

mrebanza,
most of the time more difficult than using visual studio.

you will have to look at thunderbird site and try reading the developer guidelines there first to see what they suggest.
if you can strip it down to its bare essentials it could be very workable.

best of luck, keep us posted and send us a mail when its done

*hang on, just zoomed on pic, its already on 8x0? wheres the code hanging out i wonder it should be more straight forward than i thought.

IMAP Idle for Push Email

Many modern mail servers support the IMAP Idle feature, which allows your email client to monitor an inbox. Sadly Modest on the N900 has this feature disabled for power reasons.

Can this be changed somehow?
