I had this problem last weekend:
BT did not work and "forgot" my given name of the BT device.
I tried several times to switch it on.
I already have transferred files in the past but I do not use this 2nd N900 very much.
I rebooted (in xterm as root I gave "reboot") and afterwards this 2nd N900 showed the default name
of BT, I changed the name and BT was working again (file transfer).
So reboot worked in my case.
Of course this is no real solution.

Is this some kind of "rare usage"-problem?

I have been using Bluetooth DUN via MacBook / Windows 7. It has connected quickly and tethered as expected. Sometimes there is a problem connecting the two, but mostly works.

I have suddenly been unable to power on bluetooth at all.

I go to: settings> connectivity > bluetooth.
From there, I: Bluetooth ON > Visible ON > My device's name "Nokia N900" > save = Nothing.

Tried rebooting, several times, same issue.

Anyone have similar issues? How can I resolve this?

On a side note: I am still in a 30 day return window via Amazon, so I am considering return/replace... not sure.
im having same problem like this one..i already flash the emmc n the firmware but the bluetooth still cannot use..before this the bluetooth can use..i really sure this is not hardware failure..i also try search the similar problem at the net..but no luck..i hope anybody with good knwledge of maemo can help me..tq..

I had a similar issue yesterday. I am using my n900 for the past 2 years. Had no issues. Day before yesterday, I transferred a file through bluetooth from my n900 to another mobile and the bluetooth was left in switched on status the entire night. The next day morning when I was trying to connect a bluetooth headset I couldn't. When I checked the bluetooth settings the device name was blank. Tried to save several times but no help. Finally checked the forums and got an idea. I has taken few backups in the past. I restored the settings alone from a latest backup. Bingo, the device name came back and I am able to switch on and off the bluetooth. The alternative solution for this problem would be to get a backup of setting alone from someother person(if you don't have your own backup when bluetooth was working) and restore it.

Note : Re-boot didn't work in my case

sometimes
Code:

I had same problem.
I find out that bluetoothd crushing on start up with segfault message.
To fix it, remove all directories in /var/lib/bluetooth/ and pair your device again.

For examle, i had
Code:
rm -Rf /var/lib/bluetooth/E4:D5:3D:C9:B0:44
