this is already implemented, you can use the phone that way.

useless. the keyboard is landscape, why should i use it in portrait mode then ?
in addition to that, nearly 100% of all monitors (notebook & desktop) are in landscape, too

>see photos,videos
i would guess, that 90% of all pictures are in landscape mode.
I completly agree with you. Portrait mode is pretty useless, everything requiring Portrait has already it implemented. I am 100% AGAISNT portrait mode on the desktop. All my widgets/contacts/shortcuts are configured to be set up horizontally, how da hell is Nokia gonna perfectly re-arrange them vertically? The ONLY good reason I would require portrait is on the Music Player, but the entire music player is open to questioning, lol. Do you ever feel the need to turn your laptop 90 degrees?

I have to say I have gotten quite used to landscape mode on this device, but there are some times portrait would be nice. Having the option system-wide is, I believe, all folks are asking for. And not out of the question. There's a reason it works.

1) Well, at least that I would.
Honestly.. portrait mode is one of those expected features you are mentioning. i can name a few lower and higher end phones that haev portrait mode in almost all applications

I would use it sometimes, nice with an option.
T9 in portrait, tried it yesterday on HTC Tattoo, worked well I think.

Something like this:

The phone rotates just fine when you turn of auto-rotate.
I've turned portriat mode back off in the browser, didn't use it, much better in landscape.
Photos auto-rotate any way.
Why you would want to watch video in portrait is beyond me.

Although I can't see a problem with implementing an SMS fearure using the current phone dialling pad for sending texts t9 style, I like the conversations display as it is.

And I can name a few lower and higher end phones that doesn't have landscape mode. That's beside the point. Adding portrait mode would be adding another way of doing something this phone can already do. Instead, I think it would be good if they used that effort to add functionality that the phone should be able to do, but cannot.

Not talking about MMS here, but quite a few people have been stating that they miss that too. I don't think they'd complain if they only got MMS in landscape mode. As opposed to no modes, that is.

Portrait mode is by far not the most important feature missing.

I also do not need or wan't a global portait mode in N900. But Conversations and Media Player are some apps (+Browser) in which portrait mode would be quite useful sometimes...
