isn't this a unique sound generated from a file somewhere we can adjust the volume of ourselves?

Yeah.. I think I'd far rather have my Foo Fighters play uninterrupted - texts are for unimportant, idle chitchat. If your other half crashed their car and is dying in a ditch somewhere, I hope they'd make a CALL not send a text *rolleyes*
you use your sms for idle chitchats, good for you but others might use it for something important

yes my wife does not text me when she is in an emergency but yes se does text me to say she will reach late by half an hour or so...my employees text me to tell me that the deal is now closed..my colleagues do text me when they are not reporting to office on the day..

n yes i prefer to read them at the very instant i get them..there is something called planning..if you heard the word!

So does anyone have any idea where this file is? It doesn't seem to be in /usr/share/sounds where other system sounds are.

I actually want to LOWER the volume of this beep as it is painfully loud when listening with (efficient) headphones.

I'm lucky enough that I don't have to use SMS for non-private reasons (and that I won't use it for private ones, either :P ), so I never realised this. Can see how this can get annoying, as I'm totally with you that COMMUNICATION should have priority over "I don't want my pretty music to be disturbed".

But a related "feature" that is really annoying is that the same happens to the countdown timer (so it seems like it's a system-wide setting rather than something especially built into SMS notifications). As soon as music is playing, the timer notification will be hushed - so I actually have to set an alarm instead every time I make myself a cup of tea... :P
