the dowmload section here has over 20 apps per page and there are 12+ pages.
updates are NOT counted individually. altho, different icon sets for om weather etc are.

Well, I think 10 million downloads is impressive no matter how you count it...

The competition numbers are :
100M downloads for AppStore
20M downloads for Android Marketplace
That is every month...

For an application developer the relevant number isn't so much the total number of downloads for an app store, but instead the number of per-app downloads, which is where Maemo compares pretty well with the iPhone.
Because Maemo has fewer apps available your application can get a lot more visibility, and therefore a larger % "of the market" than on Apple's App Store.

Yes, I'm surprised AppStore's numbers were so high even with 200K apps in their store.

There are quite a few iPhones out there. But yeah, for a developer it is very difficult to gain visibility in an app store with 200K apps. Any functionality you search for has a dozen different applications available, most of them crappy.
I've got no numbers for Ovi, only the ones that you can see on the Maemo Downloads site.

Yup. It's an unavoidable situation for any platform. Once you grow past a certain number, then you just can't sift everything by hand anymore. Rating systems, review sites, etc... it breeds a new market for such service.

of course there are lib-files and data-files for programs counted, too.
