just count how many apps are in here and you know the number:
extras: http://repository.maemo.org/extras/d...antle/install/
extras-testing: http://repository.maemo.org/extras-t...antle/install/
extras-devel: http://repository.maemo.org/extras-d...antle/install/

edit: copied to excel:
extras: 496
extras-testing: 995
extras-devel: 3603

of course there are lib-files and data-files for programs counted, too.

I'm saying click on Downloads on the top of this page and that is where I notice the appz increment as described.

Indeed. Recently TechCrunch analysed that a typical iPhone App Store app gets about 101K downloads. Quite a few of Maemo Downloads applications are near that number too, and with probably way fewer Maemo devices out there than there are iPhones...

The competition numbers are :

100M downloads for AppStore
20M downloads for Android Marketplace

That is every month...

I wonder what is the average number of total downloads per month for Ovi?

Ref: http://mobiletechnology.suite101.com...e_versus_apple

Edit: Apple's seems to have increased to 300M/month as they announced 3 billionth download in Jan 2010:

For an application developer the relevant number isn't so much the total number of downloads for an app store, but instead the number of per-app downloads, which is where Maemo compares pretty well with the iPhone.

Because Maemo has fewer apps available your application can get a lot more visibility, and therefore a larger % "of the market" than on Apple's App Store.

Yes, I'm surprised AppStore's numbers were so high even with 200K apps in their store.

Btw, is the Maemo download numbers include commercial/paid apps?

There are quite a few iPhones out there. But yeah, for a developer it is very difficult to gain visibility in an app store with 200K apps. Any functionality you search for has a dozen different applications available, most of them crappy.

I've got no numbers for Ovi, only the ones that you can see on the Maemo Downloads site.

Yup. It's an unavoidable situation for any platform. Once you grow past a certain number, then you just can't sift everything by hand anymore. Rating systems, review sites, etc... it breeds a new market for such service.

And 100% of the 10M downloads were free app?

Yes. I'd like to look at a few of the ways Amazon organizes their vast book collection for making Maemo Downloads recommend stuff in a better way.

Exactly. But of course there are other ways to profit from your app than plain old license revenue...
