Thanks for coming back to me Rob1n.

Rebooting meaning turning off and on again/removing the battery? If so, yes, I have tried that.

If rebooting means something else, then I may need a link to a guide for how to do it!

Thanks in advance.

That's what I meant, yes. So you still get the same "stale NFS file handle" error after rebooting?

How are you for free rootfs space ("df -h /" in X Terminal will give you this)?

dtergens - I receive a message suggesting I cannot create a directory (due to a stale NFS file) on step #3 of your walkthrough. Thanks for trying though, any further advice would be great.

Rob1n - 68% used. is rootfs the same as "space to install applications"?

What does this mean? Any got any ideas of how to fix this?
if it was for mmc a simple fsck would have done the trick. But i don't know if fsck would run on rootfs.

No, they're different areas. Actually though, the apt cache is now stored under /opt, so how much "space to install applications" do you have?

If you've got enough space free still, then it sounds like filesystem corruption. If you've got BackupMenu installed, then that can do a repair on the /opt filesystem. You should also be able to do this from MeeGo (and possibly NITdroid), if you have that installed. Otherwise you could try installing BackupMenu from the .deb file (from the File link here), but you'd need to get all the dependencies manually then, and you may still run into issues with the filesystem. The final option is, of course, a reflash (of both eMMC and firmware) - make sure you do a backup first though.

926.6MB free apparently - does that sound right?

I don't think I have BackupMenu installed sadly. I have back up, but I assume that is just the data, not the system.

Reflashing seems the only option

Okay, clean and simple instructions for reflashing? How do I know if I am reflashing the eMMC (the SD card?) or the firmware or both? Never had to reflash before, and, quite frankly, I'm hardly a "power user" as you may be able to tell.

Thanks again.

That sounds fine, yes, plenty of space free.

If you've used the built-in Backup application (with everything selected) then you'll be backing up the data, most of the configuration settings, and a list of the programs you have installed.

The instructions are here. The instructions in that section are for the eMMC, so you'll want to follow those first, then follow the instructions here for the firmware (don't let the N900 boot up in between doing the two flashes though).

Will be flashing tonight (wish me luck!)

(don't let the N900 boot up in between doing the two flashes though)
Does this mean that the N900 will TRY to boot up and I have to stop it, or do you mean that I shouldn't boot it myself between flashing.

Also, should I take the SD card out while flashing? And will putting it back in afterwards do anything odd?

Sorry about the potentially silly questions, but I am worried about ending up with an expensive paper-weight this evening.

Again, thanks.

It shouldn't try to boot up between flashes, no.

You don't need to, no, but you certainly can do (and reinstalling it afterwards won't cause any problems).

Don't worry, there's pretty much zero way of this happening. If you do boot up the N900 between flashing the firmware & the eMMC then it probably won't start properly and you'll just have to redo the flashing.

The only issue you may run into is flashing it under Windows - it seems a lot more temperamental about recognising the USB connection than Linux does. If you do have issues, download a bootable Linux CD and run the flasher from there instead.
