I think it makes more sense to open the thing and epoxy the hell out of that connector. Voiding the warranty doesn't bother me, but I don't have any epoxy...

Yeah, I did the same when filing my first connector, so while filing my other ones I used an old credit card to protect the plastic bit.

Actually, I got my device from the real first batch that is supposed to have had the issue, so listen carefully:

1) I used a short usb cable that I have since over a year (worn out) and never had an issue
2) The tiny teeth on any micro-usb male have to be pushed down (with a pen or so) because their grip is much stronger than it should be.

Voila!

If someone's really worried about the USB port, they could use a Wildcharge wireless charger. 'Course it looks ugly (the universal one), and takes away the data capability. There are other brands too, Powercharge, and Duracell.

My USB port, however, is still working after 6 months. If I could find the time and courage to open the N900 up and epoxy the port, that'd be the best.

Is there a hole in the PCB or case near the port, so that a gob of hardened epoxy will transfer stress to it, instead of relying on the adhesive shear strength alone?

Great tip, I'm sure that if you do this there wont be no problems with the connector!

Ditto. I'm using the Charger from my N85, and it slides in and out very smoothly. The Charger that came with the N900 is definitely the root cause of the majority of issues with the USB port.

even if you fix the charger, any drop of the phone while plugged in and being charged is enough to damage the usb port. I cant believe how weak it is and this is a new device that nokia sent me because the last n900's usb came out!

The best way to make sure your USB doesn't break is to file the connector and it will remain tight enough to hold without any problem

Great advice, I've used this method since day one and knock on wood no problems here. About middle of the road, when I first heard about the problems, I also filed down the two hooks with a fine metal file and there is no resistance when using the cable. Can't really find a reason for those hooks anyway since who uses the N900 in such extreme charging positions to actually need such prevention method.
