I doubt removing the applications will help - most of them don't undo any customisation you've set within the application. Have you installed anything to modify/customise the N900 (provide extra desktops, rotation options, desaturate instead of blur, etc)? You could also check what the content of the file is (cat /etc/apt/preferences) which may provide some info on what's behind it.

The last app I installed was Love Meter Maemo through Ovi Store...which I uninstalled the same day after seeing it was useless.

I tried to install Sphyro and it shows downloaded, but error to install (application pack not found). I tried with another app and it just shows the same error. In Ovi Store, the status shows downloaded.

I recall this operation error occured before last time and it got resolved on its own. I hope this is the same situation. But any suggestion would be very much appreciated.

I just backup the device just in case...

GOT IT WORKING!!!

I went to Nokia Support Discussion and tried one of the suggestion. For the benefit of those having the same problem:

Problem:
Launching Application Manager = Error : "Operation failed"
Checking for updates = Error: "Operation failed"
Download option = "(no applications available)"
Try to install apps from Ovi Store = Error : "Unable to download '(apps)'. Application package not found"

Solution:
Disable all application catalogues - autorun check updates
Enable all application catalogues
Done!
