Thanks everyone. i think i understand now what the phrase "call waiting" in english means. of course we have this too - at least i can choose to activate hearing a signal when i'm in a call myself and somebody else calls me.

i'd bet, though, that this calling person wouldn't be told that his call is waiting. he'd hear the normal signal and would assume i didn't hear the phone if i don't answer after a while. on the other hand - nobody i know (including myself) has call waiting activated, so that could have changed and i'd never know.

Can't say if I have ever seen this feature on the N900. Also if you are the one on a call and someone else calls you, do you get the beep in your ear to tell you someone else is trying to call you.
thats not true!

tested the feature of being notified when you call someone and your call is on waiting. there is a hildon notification which shows your call is waiting, and is active for a couple of seconds or so. have to test the other feature of getting beeps when you have an incoming call on waiting...

Well, I tested it now.

When they call and you are in a call, it works, beep and everything.

When you call, there is no indication you are waiting. This stinks.

It's an old problem, seem that only sonyericsson is able to manage those network messages.

Most of nokia phone doesn't, almost all recent american smartphones doesen't.

the call waiting notification is a network feature, and has to send out a specific tone to the phone to 'tell' the phone that the other party is in an existing call.

My N900 does that, and I'm on the O2 network in the UK, but I have heard that certain networks are not capable of sending out notifications...

But

a) my old phone did both, not a network limitation. All my old phones did.
b) the setting either to have call waiting or not, the other party waiting notification is not an option.
c) I have call waiting and it works.
d) Could have sworn it worked before. Really. The label that say s"calling" said "Waiting" at some point. Can't get it to work again. PR breakage?

well as far as i know, there are two different things.
1. Incoming call waiting notification : If activated, when you are in a call with someone and at the same time someone else calls you, you will hear a beep to get notified that, there is another person calling you. then you can answer or reject the 2nd call or also you can put them into conference.
2. Outgoing call waiting notification : when you call someone and s/he is already in a call talking to other person, you will either hear a beep or will see an on screen message to get notified that the person you are calling is already in a call.

now these days all operator support this feature (at least in my country Bangladesh) but some cell phone support only the first one.
my iphone 3g does'nt support outgoing notification but my N900 supports both.
