If you like linux, get the n900. The app selection isnt massive but we got most of the linux programs covered. Things like Kismet, aircrack-ng and Vi. N900 also has the best painting software. Its lacking in games but thats what emulators are for.

N900 is a PC like experience. Android is coming to n900 in the form of NITdroid. No cellular or 3D acceleration yet.

Android is more of a sandbox within linux. You can't smell the linux in Android. So it depends on how you want to program and what sort of apps you want for the platform. If you're a programmer the n900 is made for you.

I would choose an Android phone today, but I know I would be losing a lot of freedom and flexibility to make the switch.

I hope this post made some sense. Typing from bed after just waking up

Here is what I would like to know from people who have been part of the maemo experience and community:

_______________________________________

1. If you were faced with buying the N900 or an android device today, what do you think your choice has over the other option?

2. A big concern of mine is not being part of a large and evolving community, not having access to a quality app store, and not being able to easily share my apps with my platform users. Is this a valid concern and am I right to assume Android has the step up here?

3. I LOVE linux and I LOVE everything maemo seems to stand for. The idea of SSHing into my laptop or desktop give me jollies. Assume we're comparing a maemo with root access to a rooted Android (ignoring efforts that go into each), is there any comparison in what you can do for each?

4. Is the platform dead? I've been researching this choice for a while and it seems that Nokia ditched maemo to merge and make Meego, which doesnt look quite the same. Do maemo users generally feel abandoned?

5. In a couple of months after I buy the phone, what is one reason that could make me regret my decision over an android? I've heard battery life was less than 12 hours...

6. Finally: If you think maemo is still a fantastic OS and I would be missing out on nothing by not buying an android, what positive things can you say about android? (bias testing question)

I GREATLY appreciate any advice I can get on this question. I identify with the technology I own and I definitely don't want to regret my purchase.
stick to n900
its the best platform in terms of hardware *in my opinion*
and wait for the NITdroid project for dual boot or wait for meego
but n900 is still worth keeping.. unless proven otherwise

I actually think nitdroid will be totally useable once phone/3g support is enabled. Wifi works great and many apps and games are working as well. Although GPS would be awesome so we use google maps

Welcome as a new N900 owner!

The infrared port is pretty cool, you can use it as a TV remote.
The camera is pretty beastly.

I just posted a message "Project Gus: The Sad State of Open Source in Android tablets" which counts as a serious strike against Android.

For the average Jane Public Android does seem to offer more, especially in the short term, than the more serious Nokia N900 with limited future support (a little better if serious geekery isn't an obstacle).

There are other N900-like (but with better specs) devices running Android and with Android being "hot" more are on the way. The problem is knowing whether any of those can/will be unofficially or officially supported by Meego. It all depends on the level of openness of the Android devices' hardware and whether the paid Meego devs will incorporate potential support for competitors' devices.

So it's "Wait for Meego news (or other) before decideing" (sic) for me.

I bought a 7" Chinese android tablet for wife, who is not a techie type
It's just like http://www.posh-book.com/posh-pad.html (but no brand).
It's going to arrive today or tomorrow and I'll document my impressions of old Nokia user with no android experience in the competitors section.

Get a N900. Heck, if its too slow, OC it!
Its just so nice a machine, and the ability to simply pull up xterm, get root, and mess with/fix stuff is great!
