The form factor of the N800 is what drew me to the platform. I had never used IM, VoIP, RSS feeds, or bluetooth tethering before my N800 purchase in July 2007. Maemo and the NIT opened up my world of technology tremendously.

Some highlights:
1. getting A2DP working on N800 via a community hack
2. eagerly awaiting Diablo!
2.5 my first Google Talk Video call on the N800
3. flashing a leaked N810 Diablo on the N800
4. reading about all the killed SDHC cards in Chinook
5. Dual booting Deblet on the N800
6. The keyboard vs no keyboard debate when the N810 was revealed
7. reading my first FCC filing on the N810
8. Doing many great interviews of Maemo Community members
9. The revelation that RX-51 was a phone and not a data enabled tablet!!!
10. going to Maemo Summit 2009
11. Getting the loaner N900 on day 1 of the summit
12. Finally meeting Texrat at 7am in the Ibis last October
13. Getting my first application running in scratchbox, packaged (which is harder than it should be), uploaded to -devel, feedback from users, and my having the first bug logged against it in Bugzilla.

Maemo has given me a lot of satisfaction, and I hope it continues to do so!!!

I have had such a blast with this community for the past few years. Some highlights:
- Setting up an encrypted tunnel (for surfing on open APs) with ssh and tsocks on my N800
- X-forwarding Microsoft Word to my N800
- Getting OpenOffice running!
- Making free calls from any phone with DialCentral
- Video calling between N800s
- Installing adblock and greasemonkey scripts like PowerTwitter on my N900
- Getting my first package into extras
- Getting paypal donations for my work

And of course:
- Getting to know all sorts of cool people over the last few years.

It's been over a year since I first used an N900 and I'm still being surprised. I was on a Skype conference with some friends while we were gaming, and my N900 beeped at me. I put the guys on hold and answered the other call -- it was my wife calling me over SIP! I had no idea that the N900 had call waiting for Skype and SIP accounts! How cool is THAT? Oh I found out that you get a call waiting style beep when a new e-mail comes in while you're on the phone, too... Very neat...

Same time line with some different events.

1. Re-learning 'nix command line and developing relationships with people world wide that were willing to help me
2. Learning how to file a bug with "Bugzilla"
3. Deciding that iTT was where I felt most comfortable and being able to express my reasons why to people who could affect that comfort level.
4. Eagerly awaiting Diablo!
5. Seeing my bug resolved and getting BT DUN working with my iDEN phone.
6. Learning how to wrangle web content into my N800
7. Being able to develop localy stored web pages and server stored web apps for my N800.
8. Seeing forum input affecting apps developed by others.
9. Scoring an N810 for $150 from a members "sell it" post.
10. The "Big Screen" vs the "Little Screen" debate when the N900 was revealed.
11. The revelation that RX-51 was a phone and not a data enabled tablet!!!
12. Getting a data only SIM from T-Mobile and avoiding this whole new fangled phone thing altogether.
13. Grilling vegetables!
14 Seeing useful apps in development being "rung out" using input only from members in a productive thread on this forum. Hopefully a growing trend.

Its great you got people together in c-base again, its got such a cool atmosphere

I remember the amazing time everyone had at the 2008 summit there and the awesome friends and connections we made in the space-station!
It would be great to find a way to get over for the next one.
Sorry for hijacking a little bit this awesome thread...
The page will be updated today, the date for the next event wasn't 100% clear.
This time we'll have guests from Neofonie, the company behind the first MeeGo device ever, the WeTab.
We'll talk about the WeTab and hand out devices to play with.
Also I will have a speech about the maemo summer coding competition (also to get ideas from the community for the next one).
Of course there will be other content as well.

Some example why it is usefull to have a meeting in real life and not only at the forums.

I suggest everyone to do something like that in their city, too (like Quim Gil is doing, too).
You'll not only meet amazing people, share ideas and get new ones.
You'll also train your management skills and get a lot of contacts into the industrial world.
For example last time our guests were the guys from Nokia Qt which are actually responsible for the Qt Creator. How cool is that?

Taking a look at the other responses here at that thread, it seems that a highlight is often connected to creation of content.
The one did a bugreport which got resolved, the other made his first script or packaged his first application and uploaded it to the repositories. Others found it a highlight to participate at discussions at the forums or gong to maemo summit.
Wherever your skills are, participation means a highlight for you.
This is not a big secret, as you maybe know the verse: "better is giving than becoming".

Sorry for mistakes, it's early in the morning and I'm typing this from my N900...

I was caught due to this blog post: http://www.mantellini.it/?p=3508
And the best thing of it, I've learned, is this community.
Thanks all, really.

The N900 is my first Nokia tablet/phone and i just love it

I'm no dev at all, i'm the end user that benefits from all you super devs who puts in your spare time and efforts to make my and other peoples experience so much more enjoyable on this device

My moments as a end user must be:
Easy debian with all the goodies that followed that package...
Mypaint for fremantle...
Titans powerkernel...
NITdroid and SHR...
And i could go on with apps and mods and tweaks and highlight alot of things i feel is making this an awesome ride
Ohhh and ofcause unrapping this device muhahahaha began all of this
And last this is a very helpfull forum and mostly friendly, cozy, joking, funny place to be. Thanks all for your contributions
To sum it up - My highlight is to be able to explore this device and it's usage and having fun with it

What drew you to the platform, what keeps you here.
What do you remember and think should be expanded upon.
For me it started at FOSDEM 2007 when I got Nokia 770 from MDK/Nokia. It was unsupported 3 months later but for some time I played with it. OS2006 was quite ok, OS2007HE was disaster. RS-MMC slot was mistake - never bought other card then 64MB one which was in package. But device was nicer then Zaurus c760 which I used at same time (but Z could use my SD/CF cards).

770 saved me some time due to Maemo Mapper so I did not got lost in new places.

In January 2008 I bought N810 and paid full price for it. It was worth money. Faster, better, quite good keyboard.

Then during ELC-E 2009 I got email from Quim Gil with N900 discount information. Had strange evening in hotel lobby (no wifi in room) with reading all N900 reviews written by people with N900 loans. Bought it when it was available, then sent it back for replacement.

What keeps me with Maemo? Especially when I often complain about it. I think that this is a mix of few things:

- people in community (especially after Maemo events in Berlin)
- possibilities to hack software
- possibilities to write own applications - with Qt it is even easy ;D

And it is good to have phone with so many features. I read emails, tweets, sometimes chat on IM (Jabber, Skype), use SkypeOut instead of roaming to save money, use navigation apps (Mappero, Maep mostly) when I am in city where never was before. I adapt applications to look and behave better (recently ApMeFo, before some patches here and there). None of my previous phones give me such power.

It also makes it really hard when I will consider moving to next device as I do not know which OS to choose. Android looks interesting but will it have Contacts application with integrated IM? Who knows, maybe MeeGo will reach state when it will be good replacement. I do not know - did not tried it on N900 yet.

I first tasted Linux -98 or -99.. a freind introduced me. I then went on buying a book and RedHat 5.1 (i think). It was not ready for end user but i liked it. I then been on and off about linux until 2007-2008 where i made a complete switch. Using Ubuntu 10.10 now.

I first noticed Maemo when i was looking for a new phone. I was reading up on the latest and greatest. I had seen the iphone but was not impressed.. it was to closed up. So the SE X10 looked to be the one... but somewhere i found an article about N900. Which blowed me away... this was the one. It wasn't just linux.. it was debian too

This was the time i found the community. Such an awesome community. I just love the wiki and all the great people dwelling here... have been using TMO a lot. The xterm comes very handy on a small devices. Which made me learn how to use it more (you get lazy with Ubuntu). I have always wanting to contribute back to the community. I have gained so much. This even pushed me to making two simple programs. Nothing impressive but I hope to learn more

Some great moments:
1. OC'ing - first with Lethos and then with Titans.
2. Easy Debian
3. Installing other OS's like Ubuntu.
4. FileBox, Fapman, QBW and all the other great programs.
5. Flashing first time... (veeeery scary moment.)

Still a year after it's release there are coming hugh improvements to it (like Fcam, Swappiness). And still we have not seen the end of it. Hoping for ofono and what that can render..
