If it doesn't work, find the package on maemo.org (search for perl-base) and manually install it
I have that package installed but my appmanager refuses to install as it says "conflict with application packages: perl(5.8.3-3osso11+0m5).

I haven't tried an apt-get update - is it robust?

APT has super-cow power !

Yes, "apt-get update" is robust

updating to pr1.3 caused me the hell lots of trouble. Neverthless, i snaged out pr1.3 combined.bin from tablets.dev and reflashed, BUT didn't stop here i also reflashed vanilla emmc too. I lost that updating pain in the ****. This justifies things, I discovered the easiest way of updating :P.
P.S. I even didn't backup my data before reflashing. don't care tho

After a suggestion from a colleague who had the same issue, I tried "apt-get remove perl" from a root session. It said that a package called something like 'wpa-key edit' depended on perl. I then quit and uninstalled wpa-key edit from the app manager.

After that, the update installed smoothly.

I don't recall installing wpa-key edit (but I might have forgotten) - any one any idea what it might be for and why I might need it?

wpa-key edit should be used to edit WPA keys...

Basic search on maemo.org gave me this link :
http://maemo.org/downloads/product/M...wpakey-editor/
