Maybe it's time you started walking up that hill.

N900 isn't a cellphone
Pah-lease. I know us N900 owners love to say "It's a tablet, it's a geek device, ITS NOTZ A DUM SMARTPHONE!". Get real, it's a phone.

Edit:
Can you make SIP calls over 3G with it? Can you play hardware accelerated 3d WebOS games on it? Can you run OpenOffice like the one on desktop machines on it? Can you edit OpenStreet maps on it? Can you run fluid dynamics simulations in it? Can you write and run Python scripts in it? How about running DOS programs? What score does it get on the acid3 test? Can you use it as a WiFi hotspot? What about cracking WEP? What FPS do you get on the Quake engine? If you throw it up does it tell you how high you threw it? Can you VNC both to AND from it? I could continue.....
None of these functions matter when it comes to the N900s camera, and half of them don't matter at all.

The N900 does lots of what i want from electronic devices i would carry with me, and it is capable of covering an ever bigger percentage of that once additional software is added. I am certain what i've asked and described here won't be pushing the system anymore than stuff that already exists and is avaible at no monetary cost.

It clearly does not take videos with quality to your standards.

I am certain that what you have asked is far more difficult than you think.

It does capture individual frames with the quality asked for, transforming a sequence of frames into a video file is just a matter of number crunching, worse case you leave your N900 plugged on the wall overnight heating the room processing what you captured earlier.

Why would you want to stress low powered cpu on your N900 when you have probably ten time folds faster cpu on desktop pc or on laptop.

<Hypothetical situation>

Someone somehow manages to develop what you ask. A user decides to bring his N900 to a concert and wants to record some of it. The user records about two minutes and then the N900 is left unusable for quite a while.

</Hypothetical Situation>

I don't know how many times I can tell you this, It is not as easy as you make it out to be. If it was, we would most probably already have it. Obviously you don't understand that much about development. Nobody is interested because of the difficulty and lack of reward.

Simple things like installing updates, streamng music or copying big files already put the processor at its limit and increase the surface temperature several degrees, i wouldn't expect encoding a video would be any worse.

Of course things could be better with an infinitelly scalable distributed rendering system, but why waste idle cycles on the N900? And besides, you can't always count on having access to additional hardware.
