It's a magnetic switching system. Very cool. Very slick. Nokia gets bookoo points for inventiveness.

So far , all the times that I have had to charge the Nokia 770, the display goes into ' Sleep Mode ' in a few minutes. This happens even without the cover. Like I will see that the battery is low and connect it to the charger. If I look at it after a few minutes the Display is dark. In order to find out if the batterys has fully charged I simply tap the screen once and if it shows me ' Battery Full ' indicator if the battery is fully charged. If this is not the case then it will show ' Charging ' Indication. Depending on this status I simply leave it as it is or disconnect it from the charger. I still charge it ( when required ) even when the Nokia 770 is turned off. Only in such an instance, I would not know if the battery is full.

Essentially when one puts on the cover onto the Nokia 770, it never ever touches the screen. Instead a small ' Notch ' like thingie inside the cover slips gently, but snguly over another ' Notch ' like thingie at the bottom middle area of the Nokia 770. This ' Notch ' like thingie is just below the screen face. This is indeed the so called ' Magnetic Switch ' that turns the Display on and off when the cover is put on the Nokia 770.

when my unit is off and charging, the screen never goes out. when my unit is on and charging, my screen will go into the standby mode. I dont think this unit is meant to turn off when charging. i think people who says that when their unit is off and charging turns off after a while may be confusing it with the stand by mode. am i wrong or should the unit (when off and not on) really turn off when charging
