Point Taken buchanmilne, i'm trying to start a war, i too have google talk, skype and a few other IM apps currently running on my phone, but the point i'm trying to make is that everyone out there doesn't have a mobile as potent and versatile as the n900, for that we some commercial apps

IMHO, you're going around this the wrong way.
You are asking for closed applications for a closed protocol on an open platform. Rather, recommend applications for an open protocol for your poor friends on closed platforms.
There are jabber clients for virtually every mobile platform, and every computing platform.

IMHO the idea is not to try to convince everyone to switch to jabber based apps, i have over 700 contacts on my phone and approx. 90% of them use either Blackberry, iphone motorola or Nokia symbian, can you imagine me trying to convince them all to switch from whatsapp, cnectd or bbm just to accommodate me and my maemo device? If i were them i would be trying me to get with the program.

you are not necesarry to convince your friends to add you on whatsapp because whatsapp automatically add your friends, from there phone numbers it detects if they have whatsapp, and today everyone has blackberry device have the whatsapp application coz they know that they can chat with iphone, android, blackberry, symbian friends
