First, I'm basically very happy with the N800 and have probably sold three or four in the past few days to people looking over my shoulder. I'm on a trip and have used the N800 in several airports, hotels and Starbucks. Works great everywhere.
Second, in my question about Skype all they had to say was "no it's not supposed to work" and I would have been happy. I assumed that video would work because of the Nokia publicity about Skype. Here's the exact language from the Nokia web site today (July 19, 2007):
Key Features:
--Internet Communications
----Skype Support
----Internet calling with integrated web camera
Operating System:
--Key applications (additional applications available)
----Internet calling with video
I could be reading something into this that it doesn't say, but it sure sounds like my camera should be working with Skype.
Third, I don't expect the bluetooth to work with every possible phone. And I don't expect them to help me make mine work. In fact, I'm very happy to invest hours (days?) of my own time to mess around with it. But knowing that bluetooth is going to be a problem Nokia should make it easier for customers to diagnose the problem. And it would help everyone if their software displayed more useful error messages.
Here's an interesting new development. I had an unplanned 6 hour stopover in Kansas City last night. During that time I was able to get a working bluetooth networking connection once!!! I was actually online for about a half hour through my Sprint Treo. After that I disconnected to take off again. Since then I have been unable to make it work again.
Anyway, a little more customer support would go a long way to making these devices successful.
