Okay... if removing the battery while the device is on can corrupt the filesystem, what happens if a butterfinger like me drops the device so that the battery flies off? Or If a butterfinger like me drops the device whilst changing Other Halves? Then the battery is pretty sure to fly off.

Hmm, have to keep that in mind for the future. I had to remove battery on the fly today as device got stuck to scanning of WLANs and even power-button didn't work anymore. Luckily nothing like this happened.

Taking battery away when phone is completely stuck is something which I learned with Nokia's phones over the years. Pretty much automatic action for me.

I, OTOH, quickly learned NOT to do that with the only Nokia phone I've ever owned - the N900. I go to great lengths to avoid pulling the battery out while the phone is on. The most common is to kill the stuck process via SSH.

OK. So far I haven't had to kill stuck processes - although my Jolla has shown the "Unnamed app is not responding" message a few times, so it has some kind of a watchdog. The last time was when I had some 40 unread Fb messages and there had been network problems in the meantime. That time the Messages app was having problems.

Well, most of my past phones were Symbians (with exception of N9).

How did you exactly fix this? Mine is stuck in a reboot loop and it's definitely not battery.

If you managed to update to 1.0.2.5 there is recovery mode:
Recovery mode

If a factory reset cannot be performed or if the device has booting issues,

Unplug USB cable and turn off device
Press volume down and power on the device
Plug in USB cable and using USB networking telnet to 192.168.2.15 or 10.42.66.66 and follow the instructions

wow, terrible situation.
I hope it recovers!

On a note, what an excellent example of a situation that might be easier cured BOOTING CUSTOM KERNEL FROM AN UNLOCKED BOOTLOADER JOLLA!

Is it in some ways possible to break that recovery script, to get to a shell prompt I wonder ...
