Freedom from Google is big enough of a feature.

I agree.. it's quite idylic.. but in terms of big business, why should one of the great phone manufacturers go down the pan just because a minority of people in the greater scheme of things have a gripe against the Microsofts or Googles or this world?

Like "free as in speech", "freedom from Google" doesn't move the mass market.

Personally, I would do outrageous things if that actually happens. It sounds too good to be true. Way too good to be true.

There are too many unknowns and the playing field would be too 'level' if this is achieved; so I'm really skeptical the necessary parties will let this happen.

It's not a gripe. It's that, by picking Android, they don't have control over the platform anymore. You don't control the features, you don't have a voice in development, and you have to make-do with whatever Google decides to release.

Do you think PC makers were happy when Vista issues bit on their sales?

I sure hope this is part of a long term shock and awe recovery plan orchestrated by some marketing genius behind the scenes because getting this kind of news will scare a lot of people away from buying Nokia's current stock of bread and butter Symbian phones. His last ecosystem statement was just as vague. If I was a developer, I would think twice about putting my time and money into something that is still fluid and prone to mood swings. This is why people develop for iOS.

That Alien Dalvik could be the beginning, unless the manufacturers decide to block it. I always had the impression that Qt aimed to be something like that, a software development platform where you could code, and then export directly to whatever you wanted, be it Android, MeeGo, Symbian, etc... And that would be the way Nokia would devs on board, and at the same time make the "you need X platform to have X app" irrelevant.
