I am not planning to remove the plug at all - I assume connecting a USB flash drive is possible with an adapter.

After using the previously mentioned magnetic cable for a few weeks I decided to stop using it. When my N900 is active while charging it consumes more current than the power supply provides and after a while it just powers off and the battery is flat.
At first I thought it had something to do with bad batteries, but after some tests I am pretty sure it is the cable/plug.

So I am changing my advice to "don't buy" - YMMV

That's weird. Any idea why that may be? Bad contact?

Tested two N900's and two cables and plugs. I am not sure what is the root cause of the problem, but I assume only having 4 small pins making contact is not enough and is adding resistance.
There is no noticeable loss of contact during charging - the contact itself feels pretty firm (that is also the reason why I was so positive about it at first).

It does charge sufficient when the device is powered off but I need to have it charged while using VNC and wifi. No problems like this using a micro-usb cable or adaptor.

Guys! Use magnetic charging cables! microUSB Port is an engeneering disaster. It brakes on all devices!
