It looks like the Unlocked bootloader thing could indeed be the beginning of a trend.

Motorola is considering unlocking its bootloaders:

http://www.droiddog.com/android-blog...d-bootloaders/

FTA:
In terms of your question – we completely understand the operator requirement for security to the end user, and as well, want to support the developer communities desire to use these products as a development platform. It is our intention to enable the unlockable/relockable bootloader currently found on Motorola XOOM across our portfolio of devices starting in late 2011, where carriers and operators will allow it.
First SE now Moto. Lets hope that other follow suit. I can practically smell Ubuntu on my tablet

Anandtech is giving away a Snapdragon development kit! Featuring the very promising dual-core 1.5GHz MSM8660:

http://www.anandtech.com/show/4293/w...pment-platform

This package features a very fast mobile SoC, and Qualcomm's first dual-core mobile SoC. Here is an article outlining some of the performance:

Not too shabbaroo.

This contest is limited to US residents, so naturally, Canadians are given the shaft. I shall therefore think twice before lending anyone from the US my Celine Dion album(s)....

You will have to give us your full impressions! It looks like a very impressive package, and I'm *loving* the well-implemented keyboard.

I would buy one in a hot second, if it had:
1) A next-gen SoC (eg. Cortex A15 or MSM89xx)
2) A 3G radio

... but this unicornian device is right around the corner... I can *feel* it.

Attention nerds, dweebs, and geeks... Google IO is upon us!

This is just a friendly reminder that in a little over 12 days, we will be getting a glimpse into Android's present and possibly its future.
http://www.google.com/events/io/2011/

I'm most looking forward to the lectures, and what new bits of innovation the Android team has been working on. News on development seems so scant these days...

Not really android news, but very interesting nonetheless.

It seems that Nokia is 'restructuring' and axing the jobs of some 7,000 workers:

http://www.dailytech.com/Nokia+Restr...ticle21477.htm

The worst part is that the firing will continue through 2013... I suppose that's one way to improve the bottom line.

What a sad turn of events... It really blows for the workers...

It seems that the Official Google Docs for Android has arrived!

http://googlemobile.blogspot.com/201...s-app-for.html
MARKET LINK: https://market.android.com/details?i...roid.apps.docs

It looks to incorporate the Honeycomb 'Action Bar' along the top, which is pretty cool.

It also brings along with it OCR which is a novel feature.

... but I still think this could be as easily served as a web-app, just formatted for a smaller screen...

Go git 'em.

Android is under fire! Literally, major industry players -- Apple, Microsoft, Nokia, Oracle -- have started to attack companies that release Android products based on patent infringement.

Barnes and Noble being sued by Microsoft has responded:

http://yro.slashdot.org/story/11/04/...s-Android-Suit
http://www.engadget.com/2011/04/28/b...oid-unusable-a

Barnes and Noble quote:
Microsoft has asserted patents that extend only to arbitrary, outmoded, or non-essential design features, but uses these patents to demand that every manufacturer of an Android-based mobile device take a license from Microsoft and pay exorbitant licensing fees or face protracted and expensive patent infringement litigation.
Microsoft intends to utilize its patents to control the activities of and extract fees from the designers, developers, and manufacturers of devices, including tablets, eReaders, and other mobile devices, that employ the Android Operating System.
Microsoft has falsely and without justification asserted that its patents somehow provide it with the right to prohibit device manufacturers from employing new versions of the Android Operating System, or third party software.
Its a shame that this tactic is being employed, but such is business. I'm glad that B&N is calling Microsoft out on their FUD machine.

The Engadget article caps off with Ballmer trying to convince us that 'Android isn't free.' It reminds me of 1984....

Big Brother: "We're at war with Oceania..."
Everyone else: "Ohhhhh, right..."

The Galaxy S II onslaught has begun in South Korea:

http://www.gsmarena.com/samsung_gala...-news-2571.php
http://www.engadget.com/2011/04/28/s...ry-domination/

Something tells me that this phone will sell through some huge numbers. The specs and form factor are extremely desirable.

I'm looking forward to some reviews!

Here's the GSMArena Galaxy S II preview:

http://www.gsmarena.com/samsung_i910...review-588.php

FTA:
First impressions
The Samsung I9100 Galaxy S II impressed us at every turn. We were surprised at how much engineers have managed to cram into something that’s just 8.5mm thin.

The new SuperAMOLED Plus display is amazing even if it makes the phone quite a big thing to hold. The camera scored big points as did the overall performance of the phone – and that’s with the 1GHz version we tested. Samsung is yet to churn out those samples clocked at 1.2GHz.

As flagships go, the Samsun Galaxy S II is a prime example. At times we wished for some metal on the body but that would have increased the weight – at 116g the phone is lighter than much smaller handsets.

We’re not sure about the price at which the Galaxy S II will go (pre-orders currently hover around 550 euro), but its predecessor’s price gradually settled at very reasonable levels. If the same happens to this Galaxy, it might be the smartphone to buy this year.

We have yet more tests to perform and aspects of the Samsung I9100 Galaxy S II to explore, but those will wait until the full review. Our first impressions are nothing but positive and that’s quite a way to start.
The SAMOLED+ screen is to die for, and the camera takes amazing shots. Also, the phone is a performer, and the form factor is very nice.

I'm a fan. Most impressive.
