The form-factor is sick. If it had a small front-facing display for clock and caller info, it'd be perfect.

Different use case though? The form factor means you would have to use it in a significantly different way to N900/Neo900 because you can't use it closed with just the touchscreen, and as far as I can tell it isn't really made for thumb typing either (keyboard is big for thumbs and small for hands). I think you would end up putting it on a flat surface to type on it quite a lot.

hahaha
ah man...
I ran out of patience a year ago ... and I was investing in it at the beginning.
I am doubting I will ever see my 1/2 down I put on one ever come to fruition.

I think that now...
when a person can get a freakin' 1gb ram (or more) generic chinese made smart watch on ebay for under $150 CDN ...
that a $2000+
(yet-to-be-finished-after-5-years-still)
1gb n(eo)900 revamp...
makes about as much fiscal sense....
as investing in VIC 20 stock at this time.
(anyone remember the old VIC 20?)

and I know...I know...
"but that chinese generic smart watch isn't a modern linux handheld smartphone? Is it?"
that is the unique thing about the neo900 right?

get the latest pi with 2gb ram
get a battery
get a decent case
and get this... https://www.ebay.ca/itm/PiTalk-3G-IO...sid=m570.l1313
the pitalk.
(I am figuring on getting one by next april when I have time to assemble it)
put it all together...
and for under $300 to $400 CDN
you have a linux handheld smartphone running raspbian at a fraction of the price with double the ram of the neo

(and if battery life is an issue running the latest pi and a 5" screen..then get the smallest pi w and screen there is...for even less money and run it lean and battery life should be decent)

So I think that old linux smartphone argument is moot now.

You are so cruel
to dredge up that fully functional memory
in the context of something that never was and never will be.

Before enjoying the Vic20 I was programming
the [OSI Challenger](https://www.classic-computers.org.nz...hallenger1.htm)
for which there was no wait time to get.
You sent your money and back came the computer.
And it worked as advertised.

Those were the days....

haha
ah yes..
the Challenger...
yes indeed those were the days..

well..
thing is this..
I put half down on a neo..(saying the end cost isn't higher still than the projected end cost..)
roughly $900
If the neo were done 2-3 years ago..
the viability and pragmatic view of..
1- money-to-end product ...
and the
2- availability of alternate options at significantly lower price...
would be just barely there...2-3 years ago...

Now it is such a radical divide ..that it just makes no sense at all to invest 500% or more ..in funds..
for a project not even finished yet.

Not when one can get a raspberry pi w, a battery, a 3.5 screen, a case and a keyboard, and a pitalk board ...
all for under $300 CDN
and either run raspbian ...
or soon to run maemo leste...

So really..
Even if the neo were ready tomorrow.
I wouldn't throw another penny at it...
In the misguided belief "in for a penny ...in for a pound"..
My $900 I must consider a loss (hardly an acceptable one) ..
since it is now a choice between putting another $900 + in for a finished neo (whenever that will be)
vs..
putting in $300-$400 for a complete pi smartphone with double the ram and running maemo leste.

It is a real no-brainer now.

In fact..
shortly ..
the claim the title of this thread itself is to be called into question..
"Neo900 - finally a successor of N900"
the moment Leste can be considered out of beta on the pi.
Since a pi running maemo leste with a pitalk board and battery ...
will be the successor to the n900
...and most certainly be available to assemble, use and run Maemo
far sooner and at a fraction of cost.

Even given such disparity there is with perfectly fine affordable alternatives now ..
and even given 5 years now with no finished product still on the horizon..
It is doubtful...that the project will be considered closed and fold up..
It hasn't yet...
the moment the project is considered closed without completion ..
Is the very moment some or many...
will clamor for full or partial refunding of whatever remains of their investments ....sans r+d and expected costs...
So...I do not think that day will happen just yet...

but if it does..
if EVER there is even a partial neo reimbursement ...
That would be a small blessing.

Yaay, my first computer
But do you know it faced some severe marketing problems over here in german speaking region?
VIC 20 sounds like "F**k 20 times" or "20th F**k" so commodore rebranded it to VC 20 here
But everybody still knew, so it was a common gag to have the VC-20 logo replaced by a self printed "F***ER" label. (maybe only within my (dads) peer group tho). The only gripe i still have with it, my dad bought it only month before C64 introduction and i never got that iconic beast for ~5 years after release for financial reasons
Maan, those where the times. Typing down pages of printed basic code from magazines and not getting it to run, propably because of missing or wrong chars...
