I'm feared now to use the port often, is there a possibility to prevent this issue? Like fixing it better inside the device?

Texrat in his blog considered a proposal of using glue or something to help set the socket in place.

I cannot find it atm so will try to paraphrase. Hopefully he will correct me if I am wrong

If you did this and the socket is pulled off it is likely to do a great deal more damage to the circuit board. But if done well it will also spread the load across the board more effectively.

So over all prolly a little advantage

Of course you then would have no warranty at all.

I personally think a better solution would have to be implemented by Nokia.

If the enlarge the hole that the socket fits through slightly.

Then they would have to produce a plastic tube the same shap as the hole this would have a flat ridge on the outside of the case preventing it from being pushed in another ridge on the inside of the case preventing it from being pulled out.

Then extend into the case and grip onto the back of the original connector.

Basically holding the whole connector mechanism in place against the side of the case.

Of course fitting this and opening it for repair would be a nightmare

I'd like to point out that my N900 USB port fell out of the device without any physical damaged whatsoever. No undue force, no accidental drops - just normal everyday use after 6 weeks of owning it. I have plenty more to say. See comments by Mark W on http://tabulacrypticum.wordpress.com...-an-n900-risk/

I'll be vigourously pursuing a repair/replacement, while pushing my complaints to the highest level.

Exactly. You can get an idea of how it would site by lying the micro usb flat side against the speaker, then imagine it extended to cover the n900 micro usb slot and blend down nicely, that would be the usb-saver You could probably even make a thinner micro usb cable for this, looking at it.

Ben

PS. Also checkout Custom Back Cover - one of my ideas for a custom back cover is to move the micro usb by incorporating a plug into a back cover and have a ribbon round to a small usb plug that is flush and permanently attached to the n900 usb.

Can I suggest that the UK contigent take the time to write to Watchdog and complain. A little bit of negative publicity can do wonders....

It has been couple of weeks since I got mine and the port appears to be holding up for now. As a precautionary measure, I am considering getting square trade warranty, but it is a hefty $125+ for a 2 year. Any thoughts?

I was just checking the usb power socket, there is a small wiggle (very small unless I am looking for it) sideways. Was that the starting point for you folks also?
