.
WSJ was so wrong, i'd kill for a streak 2 with a qHD screen and a dual-core.

Good article that kind of sums up some of my feelings lately. Don't get me wrong, I like Android a lot--but I really, REALLY wanted a true honest-to-God Linux tablet and Android falls pretty short. I believe that Nokia is partially to blame for this, throwing away the opportunity to really get Maemo off the ground but making stupid half-arse mistakes along the way. Anyway, kindly RTFA, please. heheh

I share the sentiments and the frustration.

As a Zaurus user from the SL-5500 days I know just how great and satisfying Linux on a handheld can be.

I do wonder what happened to all that Zaurus activity, Moblin, the Netbook projects (not to mention Maemo, Mer and Meego) does all of that work just disappear forever into thin air? I guess it does.

Headlines such as this come along from time to time and give me hope but it is always a false dawn
“Sony Encourages Linux On Their Phones”
http://linux.slashdot.org/story/11/0...n-Their-Phones
I mean, if Sony actually did what the headline says I would probably buy the damn phone.

Very interesting! Lets hope more follow suit. It's a great idea!
I might be getting the Atrix 4G, but I won't be getting the silly laptop dock though! My N900 will still be alive and kicking however, I want to see the progress of the CSSU to the end

As much as I would love to see a Traditional Linux (TL) tablet from a productivity standpoint, I don't think it's necessary.

I think that TL has certain features over Android that make it *very* desirable to geeks. The structure of the FS, traditional applications, a rich scripting environment, a modifiable kernel through modules, regular multi-tasking, etc, etc, etc.

Rather than start from the beginning, why not extend Android? It already has mass distribution, and implementations on swaths of product. At its core, Android runs a stripped linux kernel and standard libraries -- It's essentially linux, with some different software than is found in traditional distributions and a unique FS structure. It would be FAR more prudent, to create a bridge between the two OSs and fill in the feature gaps missing from Android, rather than start from scratch and hope for traction.

And please don't say that it's not possible. It has already been done with VNC and chroot. A deeper integration may take creativity, but I assure you, if you can shoehorn Windows apps into Linux, you can certainly do the same with TL apps in Android.

On the flipside, it would be great to give Android to TL in the same way that Android has been integrated into RIM's QNX platform. Imagine having access to the Android market on your Ubuntu distribution? Certain apps/games would be quite welcome. I would use it tomorrow, given the opportunity.

It's all open source. I don't believe that this Android vs. Linux needs to exist. I believe that they can quite literally coexist at the same time, on the same hardware, and much more quickly than trying to develop a mobile linux variant from the ground up and hoping that somebody will notice in this hugely competitive marketplace.

Samsung's Galaxy S II already has collected 3M pre-orders

http://www.ubergizmo.com/2011/05/sam...orders-placed/

This is very impressive and is looking mighty likely that it will see its 10M units moved this year.

This phone will be a world-wide smash hit.

Agreed.

Someone needs to get the 2.3.4/CM7 source code then tweek it.
Tweeks:
-1280 x 800 support
-mouse cursor support
-App support for current android apps and honeycomb apps (when source is ready)
-remove app pausing (all apps run in the background)
-Apps are made fullscreen
-Or Apps can be stacked side by side (think landscape) = windowing
-UX is designed like a hybrid of the new MeeGo (tablet) UI + Playbook UI + iOS UI ...a true multitasking, fast-functional interface optimized for tablets
-The browser from Chrome OS (ie the full-blown one, not the watered down one)
-Supports the three user buttons (Back/Home/Menu) and their secondary (long press) functions=Close App/List of Running Apps/Search
-Uses three major platforms: C++, QML, Dalvik (Flash10.2 is supported but not a development platform)
... then apply this software to a Tegra2/drivers (since its the most abundant next-gen processor). Imagine if such a beauty got ported to the ASUS Transformer!!

Very good PR stunt, actually.
An even better PR stunt was performed by climbers who chatted with their families on cell phones before dying on the slopes of Everest.

In the light of Everest as popular graveyard, I don't think tweeting from there is that fun or groovy. People should tweet from there, but not make a big deal about it.

Zen Pinball has been released for Tegra devices. Wow's the Capt'n

http://www.ubergizmo.com/2011/05/zen...r /> android/

VIDEO: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=s4L7INgi_So (Zen at 2m:40s)

Exceedingly impressive visuals. Truly.

But this usher's in true device fragmentation, where Nvidia is attempting to turn devices running the Tegra into a 'platform' of sorts, with games that will only work on its hardware. Surely playstation is doing the same and if this is a popular strategy, expect others to follow suit. The community danger is the comfort of the eco-system that companies set up. If the tools are easy to use, and the revenues are high enough, developers may opt to target specific devices rather than other architectures in the development of their games.

It's like the console wars have found a new front.

I personally don't have a huge problem with this, but I would like to see how Google responds. No doubt that Google is well aware of this and is trying to coax game developers to use methods that are platform agnostic, however I think it will take a serious action to prevent a fissure in this very high grossing area of the market.
