When I said "there's no magic," I guess I just meant that I didn't do anything special for Java. It is all standard Debian packages that I installed using standard Debian apt-get. There's lots of magic here, for me too. I already confessed that have no idea how most of it works, either.

intery: The problems you are having do indeed seem to be related to the open Java webstart program. Two possible solutions I found here are:
  1. Put the domain you are trying to connect to into your /etc/hosts file
  2. Run javaws with the -nosecurity option...
    Code:
    javaws -nosecurity https://fx2.oanda.com/java/beta.jnlp

OK, that worked fine. I freed up something like 188mb by removing openoffice. When I run R and produce a plot, it displays nicely (it resizes after tapping the screen). But when I minimize the window, I cannot find a way to bring it back. I can make new plots and display them and R indicates the plot devices are still being used, but there is no hook in the OS to retrieve them. A similar thing happens with nedit. I installed the nedit editor and I can launch it from the command line. But when I minimize the nedit window, I have no way of bringing it back (which makes it useless!). Any ideas on getting around these problems? Thanks.

rabilon: You have three choices.
(1) Use these applications in LXDE or
(2) open the Debian Chroot and use "wmctrl -l" to list the available windows and then "wmctrl -a <windowname>" to restore the lost window (you only have to use the list once, after that, once you know the window name, you can make a command in Personal Menu to run as root: "debian wmctrl -a <window name>") or
(3) use kciconsbox to find and restore your lost windows. This is a GUI frontend for wmctrl.

I think the answer to my own question is the "Toggle Movable Windows" under Settings. This brings back the previous R plot window.

...erm, that's not a very "clean" solution... you're basically restarting the window manager to restore your windows....

That may be so, but it's easy - a lot easier than the other methods that were suggested. There were other problems trying to run R in the LXDE desktop.

Regardless, I have to say that I'm amazed how well R works using Easy Debian on the N810. It's great to be able carry R in one's pocket! Thanks so much for making this possible.

Has anybody experienced a tablet crash and reboot while using OpenOffice?

Twice in a row, I experienced the above when I pressed a key on my iGo to reactivate it after I had stepped away from my tablet for a bit; I was working on a spreadsheet. Basically, the tablet locks up, the light around the d-pad starts blinking and the tablet reboots.

rabilon: you might want to try the kciconsbox app for the easiest method of finding lost windows that doesn't involve restarting your window manager.

hordeman: I've had my whole hildon-desktop crash on me while using my iGo, usually pairing and unpairing. There is definitely something a bit unstable and wonky in the bluetooth-keyboard area of the tablet. Never had a total tablet reboot though. Might be something in OpenOffice...
