As danramos already said, gPodder uses the built-in media player for playing back podcasts. So if the built-in media player supports output using the FM transmitter, gPodder supports it, too - at least when using the media player to play back episodes.

That said, from my experience of using an iPod mini with FM transmitter in a car back in 2007, if possible, use a cassette adapter or some kind of line-in and plug it into the headphone jack. Much better quality in my opinion. Might not matter for spoken podcasts, though.

Please contact me if you want to test the new version Be aware that it might break things (as always)..
Seems like I magically got upgraded to the new UI (gpodder 2.0-diablo1) tonight, straight from the usual repo.

My first POSITIVE impressions:
  • Maybe it's just me but it seems MUCH snappier.. a lot faster than previous versions.
  • Nice updated icons. I like them a lot and the sizes are consistent.
  • It didn't ever occur to me to think up such a thing, but I love the 'Hide podcasts without episodes' option. Its made it a LOT easier to navigate podcasts that I want to play--even while I'm driving. Anything that makes it easier for me to tap and play something without averting my eyes from the road to look at my N800 dashboard mount gets rave compliments from me.
  • I can select multiple podcasts to perform operations on (delete, mark as listened, etc.). I'm very happy to see that return.
  • I noticed that tap-and-hold (context menu) comes up on podcast feeds on the left side--which is much nicer than the previous way of going up to the drop-down menu to do something to THAT podcast feed you tapped to highlight.
  • Related to the last point, I also see that the tap-and-hold context menu has an 'Update podcast' option. This is great--a MUCH more intuitive way to selectively update only one feed and vacate the portion of the toolbar where 'Update selected' is currently occupying precious screen space that could be used for more often used functions (play, delete, etc.) and change the single-tap context menu into a tap-and-hold so that the interface is consistent.
My first NEGATIVE impressions:
  • There's no way for me to edit an already-existing feed. If I tap-and-hold and then choose 'Podcast settings', I get information on the feed but I can't edit any of the details for the feed such as the feed's URL. I also can't get a standard system keyboard to pop up after highlighting text so that I can copy/paste text from the details listed like I used to be able to do.
  • There's no 'Advanced' option in the preferences menu. I rather liked that I could go in and tweak things without breaking out an xterm window and fiddling with the gpodder.conf file manually.
  • If I select a bunch of podcasts from a feed, then select 'Play', it reports 'Opening x episodes' (x being the number I highlighted), the episodes are marked as played but a player never launches to play those episodes.
I think that's it for now--it's only been a few minutes playing with it. I'm sure I'll have more to ramble on about later. Let me know if you want any of these filed as bug reports.

Danke!

I decided to drop this feature (editing URLs) long ago. It just makes things more complicated. If the URL of a feed changes, just add the new URL and (if you don't care about the old episodes) remove the old one. If you do care, either re-download in the new feed or leave the old podcast in place.

I just wanted to write: "Highlighting is possible, and you can use the hardware keyboard to copy things." Which is when the symbolical light bulb appeared above my head and reminded me of all the good N800 users out there. Please file as a feature request - a "copy selected text" menu item or tap-and-hold menu item (if that doesn't make the text lose its focus) is probably what you want, right?

That dialog was deemed not suitable for end users and direct access has therefore been made more difficult.

For you, this means Fullscreen-Fullscreen-Plus-Minus-Plus-Fullscreen in the preferences dialog. Have fun

Looks like a bug to me. Please file it as one and don't forget to add which media player you have configured. Thanks

Ah.. this is fine, then... but one nagging issue is that it then also makes it impossible for me to also cut/paste this field (since it can't be highlighted like the rest of the feed's details), in case I want to paste it into a web page or to a friend in chat or something.

This also brings up two other points:
  • The verbage of the menu item 'Podcast settings' seems weird considering it doesn't look like there's any settings. Which leads me to my next point...
  • There was no obvious way to know how to set the user/pass, rename a feed, reload an image or load a file as a cover image. I discovered by accident that there was a drop-down for that from the 'Podcast settings'. This doesn't seem very intuitive. Perhaps some finger-buttons would make this a but more obvious for users.

More or less, this would work--better still, once something is highlighted, the options to copy/paste could be available in the drop-down menu to remain consistent with most applications that allow cutting and pasting from available fields. I'll post the bug report on that later today.

While this was cool in the 80's, I think performing a Konami Code variant to get at a menu that I find very useful as a user is a hostile way to hide it. This doesn't make the program more useable, it cripples it for a more advanced end-user. You might instead set up a persistent option in the gpodder.conf that allows the advanced menu button to show. That way, I can always enable it once for myself and it'll always be there... if I so choose to be so daring.. without having to relive the 80's all over again every time. Alternatively, an icon-only almost-hidden icon somewhere in a corner of a window (like, say, a tiny red ! in the ABOUT box or something obscure like that).

My initial thoughts:
* I like the scrollbars. Kinetic scrolling is a great idea, but scrollbars are faster for long lists & kinetic scrolling had some odd behavior. And hooray for multiple-selection! This helps me b/c I usually listen to podcasts in bunches. It also helps for loading Librovox.org books as a podcast & downloading the chapters via gPodder.
* I agree that it seems snappier!
* Really niggling, but for Episode Details merely pressing the escape button closes the pop-up. But for Subscriptions/Podcast Settings a long hold of escape closes the pop-up. I prefer the "merely pressing" for all such pop-ups, but any kind of consistency would give me one last idiosyncratic factoid to have to store in my brain.
* I've had to shift some usage patterns due to removed features, but I think it's OK.
Thanks for your work on this!

Both of these changes are thanks to feedback from users like you. benny1967 wanted normal scrollbars, and after I tried them once again, I also liked them more than kinetic scrolling. Multiple selection is back because danramos mentioned that this was really essential for him, so I re-introduced support for this. It's still either multi-selection or gestures, but you can choose which is more important to you.

Agreed. Can you please file this as a bug at bugs.maemo.org, so I don't forget fixing this "sooner or later"? Thanks!

What removed features are you talking about? Please describe your usage patterns, this helps planning for the next version.

As a friend once said to me, "All features are good features as long as they're optional and can be enabled or disabled."

I'm being prompted to update to 2.0-diablo1 from diablo extras, but it won't install because there is gpodder-icon-theme >= 2.0 is missing. If I enable extras-devel then it will install, but users who only have extras enabled won't be able to update, will they?

Thanks, seems like this package hasn't got promoted. Did so now.
