That aside, it works flawless and reliably and it was incredibly simple to configure. If there was ONE change I'd make to it to make it perfect, it would be that--inode changes in the tree it's monitoring should kick off an update (MediaTomb does this, for example, but I don't think MediaTomb supports the XBOX 360's flavor of UPnP in addition to standard support).
Hmm... You could consider inotify which has been included in mainline linux kernels since 2.6.13. It basically monitors a FS for changes and has an API for these events.

Here's a script that a user copied that uses inotifywait (an inotify command intended for script use), that waits for a change to a directory tree, then fires a command (or commands):

Code:
 #!/bin/sh
       while inotifywait -e modify -t 120 /my/media/directory; do
         /etc/init.d/ushare reload
       done

And here's the inotifywait man page:
http://linux.die.net/man/1/inotifywait

Of course you'd have to install the requisite software, but this should help tremendously!

Here are install instructions:

Yeah, a bummer. VLC doesn't seem to support DLNA, but perhaps I need to look deeper. It may be offered in some sort of a plugin.

Indeed! I haven't been able to find a samsung adapter, but here's an inexpensive product on Amazon:
http://www.amazon.com/Full-1080p-Med...2&sr=1-3-fkmr1

I don't know what DLNA 1.5 compliant means, but who knows, it may work?

In fact, the price is quite good, and if it *does* work, then I'd be very interested in getting one for my setup, which is far too old to be DLNA compliant!

It says it is an adapter, I wonder if this would help me out?

True, I think this would be my deciding factor to get the Tab. I'm not worried about future higher spec tablets since it's inevitable. And like I said, if you choose to wait for a better one, there will always be a better one.

I just don't want a situation where one year down the line this non-game app doesn't work since my tablet is out specced!

Wow! Great find! It looks like it does exactly what you're looking for in a nice package. I wonder what the codec support is like... I'm going to keep my eye out with this product as it seems to do exactly what we're looking for!

Now this is interesting.....
Samsung Galaxy Tab Amazon price slashed to £599
http://www.slashgear.com/samsung-gal...-600-21103469/
http://www.amazon.co.uk/gp/product/B0042D75TU/

Still quite costly, but certainly cheaper than originally feared. I wonder if this will be the final price or will the price descend further?

I bet it will drop more still... But it's only a guess.

EDIT: As point of comparison, the 16GB 3G iPad is similarly priced via amazon:
http://www.amazon.co.uk/New-Apple-iP...5112237&sr=1-2

Both are very expensive in the UK!

Hmm does that mean the WiFi version would cost less?

Evidence? (just curious, if I do go with the Tab). A general google search seemed to have mixed results for customer support.

At the moment, I can only go with anecdotal evidence from myself and others around me (much like my own Android experiences have so far been INCREDIBLY better customer experiences with all companies involved so far). So far, my Samsung owning coworkers and friends have been, on the whole, very pleased. Mind you, YMMV.
