Just got a chance to follow Sir Qole's steps, cleaning up any stuff from my previous attempts first, just in case.

Worked absolutely perfectly, as expected!!
Back online with ALL IM protocols including ICQ, all icons displaying... Sweet!

Also, already had Nokia Chat (XMPP profile) installed and pleased to report no conflicts.

Thanks again Qole!

icbolsh, don't forget to click the green Thanks! on Qole's post...

I love the whole set up. The only thing I am missing from Pidgin is new email arrival notifications on my MSN account. But after doing some looking around I found a way to get that. I am forwarding a copy of all my emails to my gmail account which I have set up on my Modest email client. So I get the sound and flash when a new email comes in. MSN usually does not forward to non MSN accounts but I found a post that shows how to get it to do that.
Here:

now it is all set up the way I like it with IM and new email notification. Thanks.

I would recommend bookmarking this post on the tablet and using it to install. Cut-and-paste is a lot easier than re-typing stuff from a screen, especially step #10.

These instructions are for an up-to-date Diablo install:
  1. Go into Application Manager
  2. Tools -> Application Catalogue
  3. Add Chinook Extras:
  4. Close. Application Manager will update.
  5. Open Catalogues again, this time go into Red Pill mode by pressing New, putting matrix into the Web address, then hitting Cancel. Choose Red Pill.
  6. Install RTComm Beta 0.7.
  7. Choose the new menu item, Extras / Rtcom Beta Installer, and let it install.
  8. Go back to "Blue Pill" mode by repeating the Red Pill instructions but choose Blue Pill this time.
  9. Open a terminal. Get root.
  10. Downgrade your libpurple and link local libraries by doing the following:
    Code:
    apt-get install libpurple0=2.4.3-1collabora1 avahi-daemon=0.6.16-3maemo2 avahi-dnsconfd=0.6.16-3maemo2
  11. Answer yes to all the questions. Wait a long time for it to install.
These instrutions will give you the full list of account types (including the very cool "link local"), and they all work well on my tablet.
Badass! Worked for me! Thank you!

Hmm I tried the "apt-get install libpurple0=..." but I receive:

Version "2.4.3-1collabora1" for "libpurple0" not found.

I just checked, it is still in the Collabora repository, even after a refresh.

Code:
apt-cache policy libpurple0
libpurple0:
  Installed: 2.4.3-1collabora1
  Candidate: 2.5.1-0nix2
  Version table:
     2.5.1-0nix2 0
        500 http://repository.maemo.org diablo/free Packages
 *** 2.4.3-1collabora1 0
        500 http://packages.collabora.co.uk diablo/user Packages
        100 /var/lib/dpkg/status
This means:
  1. you haven't fully installed the RTComm Beta package (this package adds the Collabora repository)
  2. OR, you disabled the Collabora repository in your Application Manager
  3. OR, you haven't refreshed your application list since adding the Collabora repository (very unlikely)

I've posted a bug. Please vote if you have been afflicted with this bug, too. I hope we can get an official fix.
