Well reading this thread, I think well can congratulate Nokia on the much anticipated PR1.2 release, it certainly blew my socks off in sheer terms of performance enhancement and the mind-boggling list of new features added.

The OTA update went without a hitch, with as few as 30% of owners having to perform a full re flash, and slightly less have bricked the phone completely. Although some reports suggest that the bricking phenomon is a simple user error in that they inadvertently removed the entire USB port from the N900 after charging.

Many sceptics were sceptical about delays after delays with this release, "I would rather wait and have them properly quality test it" was the cry from the faithful, the sceptics were scornfully told "Quality assurance takes time", thankfully the sceptics were just being sceptical and Nokia proved them wrong, additional extensive Quality Testing ensured virtually no bugs made it into this slightly delayed release.

All in all it has been a resounding success with just a few minor glitches caused by people buying the wrong device, installing something "stupid" to slow it down and failure to master vi. Some Nokia sources suggest that in fact it may be several generations before mankind has the ability to use the N900 to its full potential, as most problems are caused by users. In fact most users should consider a course in C to get the most out of the N900, preferably by rewriting the entire OS from the ground up.

For me the main highlights are:

Battery life is now extended, and can almost last a day when completely switched off. (removing the battery can apparently extend the battery life an additional 2 hours)

Portait mode can now be enabled in 3 more apps, by pressing ctrl + R + something else whilst standing on one leg simultaenously photographing and communicating telepathically with the N900

Email is now enhanced so you can now attach TWO attachments.

File manager can now handle files.

This release has obviously whetted the appetite for users for PR1.3, some say it may be released as early as next year, and rumours abound that native MMS support may be bought fom the ovi store.

A Nokia spokesman when congratulated on the game-changing PR1.2 release simply said "Wibble".

apt-get update: updates the list of software on repositories. It doesn't update anything else.

apt-get upgrade: Upgrades existing software to new version. So, do apt-get update to get a list of new software, then apt-get upgrade to get new software.

Well, what's what I got in my first update prompt. To the best of my guess, if it's not listed, it's not updated.

If you want to sleep soundly, check some of your versions from HAM against the Maemo.org package list. If they aren't up to date, we'll keep digging but at this point I'm not sure anything IS wrong.

IIRC, HAM uses apt-get behind the scenes, so it wouldn't give you any advantages, except maybe list packages that are newer but not required.

@garyc2010

While quite humorous, I should point out that PR 1.2 is a bugfix release, mostly, and the enhancement list is short on purpose. Also, some were never bugs or were only experienced by a few people. One could make anything disappointing by looking from the wrong side.

Finally, while nice to read, this is a PS 1.2 bug hunt/help. Tongue-on-cheek rants would be better suited for off-topic? If nothing else, some of us would like to join in the fun.

I'm not sure if it works OK or not (I really don't have a minute to try it, but seems like it works) but here's the solution for menu bug:

Edit your /etc/xdg/menus/hildon.menu file, Paste this:
<!DOCTYPE Menu PUBLIC "-//freedesktop//DTD Menu 1.0//EN"
"http://www.freedesktop.org/standards/menu-spec/menu-1.0.dtd">

<Menu>

With menu customization is there any way to create folders or even bring back the more... button?

Dude, you seriously crack me up. All your 9 posts are completely hilarious. Your sarcasm is just fantastic. Thanks for your hilarious posts. Kudos.

About the pr1.2 tho, I haven't installed it yet, and I'm not going to until/ if this bug is fixed. That would just piss me off too much if that happend to me. But I was wondering, will this ever be fixed? If so, how, another update? I thought this would be the last version since they are probably just going to be working on MeeGo now. I haven't had my N900 for a very long time and this is the first update I see, really, so... any chance that this would be fixed any time soon? If not, I'll just stick with pr1.1, which works just fine
