Thanks for the feedback everyone. I guess this is where a pref might come in handy. Gesture support while the screen is unlocked is great and buttons have no use while the screen is unlocked, but if you're out taking a walk and the phone's in your pocket and you want to skip a track feeling for a button in your pocket is a lot better than taking the phone out, unlocking it, hitting the right on screen UI element, locking it and then putting it back in your pocket. Having the physical buttons be useful should be pref enabled.

dont know if its possible, but perhaps you could implement these controls that will only work if the screen is locked, and revert to volume/camkeyd controls when unlocked? keeps everyone happy! (i'm already happy but thats probably the medication.)
