We won't even start to sell during next 6 months, so don't worry. We are producing to order, in batches of a few hundred devices, once we collected enough preorders. You most likely will be able to join first batch still, if you "hurry" a bit. and of course we hope we can build a second batch eventually, when first got built and shipped.

Though...I'm sure I'd have no prob coming up with enough pocket change to make a grand (easily in 4 months without resorting to pulling out a credit card...) to drop on one from the 1st batch.

Aside from touchpad issues,
GSM dialing + call management + sms/ussd management
is about the only thing any linux distro lacks
being able to run as a telefony handset:
The only elephant in the room,
the rest is just furniture and paint...

i definitely want this one if i'll be able to use most of "userland" N900 software without changes.

I should mention that while IrDA uses the same wavelength as "Commercial IR" (what remote controls use), it runs at a much higher speed and a much lower power level. Although some folks have managed to retask IrDA LEDs to output CIR commands, they generally don't have significant range (half a meter at best). So, you may have to choose between IrDA or CIR if you're going to replace the IR LED.
Also, I'm not entirely sure there's enough room in the existing case to fit both an IR receiver LED and an IR transmitter LED (at least for CIR)...
EDIT: I should mention, if you're taking requests
, it'd be nice to have an LED that provides a little more output power. In particular, the current N900 LED doesn't seem to have enough strength to communicate well with Sony TVs...
