This should be quite easy to understand since the N900 already had much better integrated social networking than i.e. Android had... Has.
Just because some phone is running on Linux / Unix / OpenSourced Symbian doesn't mean that an OS can't have a good/bad layer on top to protect the user/kernel/company. Nokia will not use the word "Linux" in marketing or even in market research.

So, would he prefer not to have the Messages UI on N900, because it allows / forces him to use Facebook chat (or twitter via a telepathy plugin), and instead have a primitive SMS-only replacement?

could we stop talking about how usefull and needed a hwkb is? and about all of you who would never ever buy a device without it?
Everybody here knows that many people here wouldnt buy a device without a keyboard and thats ok.
but think about that:
i think everybody agrees that the mass (the american idol watching guys, not us) wants a slim device (without a hwkb) and nokia wants to sell as many phones as possible, so i agree with nokia that their decision is the best to make money and to (maybe) "disrupt" the market.
my advice for hwkb-lovers: buy the device, regardless of having the hwkb or not. If the N9 (without hwkb) sells well, nokia could thing about a sucessor (or "sister" model) with a keyboard. but if it doesnt sell well, nokia would be confirmed about their decision going wp.
So, if you want a maemo/meego device next year, buy a maemo/meego phone this year and hope for a big hit.
and guys, always remember the name of this forum, its not hwkbdevices.org
