Funny, I just ran across tidbit of information pertaining Casio leaving digital compact camera market over the weekend.

I agree. Sites like Flickr like to point out that the iPhone is their most used camera. I've heard folks talk about getting a particular phone mainly due to the camera whereas I rarely hear (now) folks bemoan the lack of a hardware keyboard beyond this forum.

Not that it is not important; quite the opposite. But it's just an indicator of how the hardware keyboard is not really a primary concern any longer to the average consumer.

hahaahaha....agreed mscion
and yes most certainly gerbick...
orwell's futuristic view is here...it just lurks below the surface of society ...waiting to happen...
but until such time as such drastic measures by states globally are taken..
Huxley's vision and implementation is working just fine...

Speaking of dystopian visions...
I just saw a week ago...
a film I had completely missed ...
that puts them both to shame ...
and REALLY smacks of the here and now..
Still can't believe I missed it...all these years...never noticed it.
Nigel Kneale's "The Year of the Sex Olympics"
It is truly horrifying in how close it comes to where we are now and where it is leading us...

The film makes the societies and peoples of Huxley's and Orwell's vision....
Look absolutely tame...sane...highly educated, ethical and moral ..in compare.
And it is such a well done film.
the sense of foreboding is palpable...
what it evokes is ...
well...
it is very well done...
I will put it that way..
definitely a must see...
youtube has it ..
I highly recommend it.

and as far as comparable dystopian films that come closest to the "now"...
I also suggest "Death Watch" (1980)
It could be just a few years down the road...that is how close the science and the world politics and society is... in it...
and what the film plot is....well...
They saw the direction we were going ...40 years before it came to be...
and they hit it bang on with this film...
Another must see...

You grew up in the wrong part of the world.

Or, come to think of it, the right one.

Depends on your perspective I'd think. At least in Orwell's dystopia "Die Gedanken sind frei" [1] - sort of.

My reference was to gerbick's assertion of who was more right. That is, whose predictions were closer to reality. Not which reality I would prefer.

In the part of the world where I grew up, Orwell was definitely closer to the spot. After all, he modeled his books on that world. Unlike Huxley, whose creation was just an educated guess.

Yeah, seems that Orwell and Huxley were seeing the future of different sides of the Channel. BTW, Pichlo, where did you grow up?
