I just did this and finally got it to work.

gain root access to your N8x0. type cp /usr/share/navit/navit.xml home/user/.navit

that will copy your xml file to your home/user/.navit folder make sure you type that exactly! Next I used vi to edit the xml file. just go to you home/user/.navit folder and type: vi navit.xml

the area you want to change is around the 7% mark. change the mapset to yes. I have my map located on my MMC card in the folder called map (Nokia N810). the location should look like this
<mapset enabled="yes">
<map type="binfile" enabled="yes" data="/media/mmc1/map/map name.bin"/>

If you are unfamiliar with vi I used the following website to help me out. message back if you are still in need of help.

you don't need to be root to copy the file in your home directory, do it as user

I don't know if you've already answered this but I downloaded a map of my area (binfile:$navitsharedir/maps/osmbbox.... .bin), and when the gps gets a fix it doesn't show the map. i have the above map file check marked to show.
thanks

I've been trying to set Navit to work on my N800 for the past couple weeks with no success.

Firstly, I have no GPS locator so setting the right area of the map was critical.

From the original navit.xml I have not changed anything except the center location and .bin file.

Here are the two areas I've changed and I have still yet to see the map. I've done everything as written yet see a tan screen with no map.

<navit center="33.95 N 117.30 W" zoom="128" tracking="1" cursor="1" orientation="-1" recent_dest="10">

<!-- Mapset template for openstreetmaps -->
<mapset enabled="yes">
<map type="binfile" enabled="yes" data="/media/mmc2/california.bin"/>
</mapset>

I haven't touched anything else. What am I doing wrong. Both Navit.XML files in usr/share/navit and /home/user/.navit have this same exact navit.xml file. The bin file is in the right place as well.

What am I doing wrong.

SoupDragon and JayGo333 you are finding out one of the frustrations of Navit in that documentation is still a little spotty. However someone has been busy and done some good work that should be a good start at getting Navit to at least run on your tablet. You might have gone through it already but if you haven't here it is...

http://wiki.navit-project.org/index....t_on_n770/n800

I don't know who wrote that section of the wiki but I'm pretty sure it's one of the subscribers to this thread. Just go line by line and you should end up with a "working" version of Navit.

One note on the map thing... If you have multiple maps within a directory that you want to use you can always use *.bin. IE my mapset in Navit looks like...

<map type="binfile" enabled="yes" data="/media/mmc2/maps/*.bin"/>

When I first setup my configuration I was using a California map and a Nevada map. Using the above command would cause Navit to load both maps and thus I would have both California and Nevada displayed. The other nice thing about doing this is that if you ever update your maps you don't have to worry about keeping the filenames the same. Just dump the new map into your maps directory and you are good to go. Remember to remove the old mapfile though!

A couple of more notes... If you are having trouble seeing anything it is most likely because Navit is centering somewhere where you DON'T have any map data (as far as I know there is no "world map" that would display at a large zoom level so you end up with just a blank screen). The easiest way to deal with this is to just connect to a GPS receiver and Navit will center on your location that is presumably within the area of the maps you have downloaded. Another option is to keep zooming out until the map data you have is visible, you might have to scroll around a bit as well. This second option isn't perfect because depending on the zoom level there might not be anything drawn.

Finally you need to make sure you disable the other mapsets in navit.xml (IE garmin or reiserplaner) and that OpenStreet maps is the only one enabled in the Navit.xml file. You will find this in the same area as the openstreetmap section that you used to specify the location of your maps.

Oh, one last thing... If you haven't done so already update to the latest SVN build. The latest version had some bugs fixed that have made Navit MUCH smoother and faster to operate. The menus are still quite slow but map drawing and scrolling is now very functional.

good morning -
its prob me being a bit thick but ->

'Configure Navit by editing its XML configuration file, e.g. in xTerm:
Search for the file navit.xml as superuser root
Create a folder called .navit in your user directory
Copy navit.xml there and edit it
Replace the path to the map file to fit your device and configuration:
<mapset enabled="yes">
<map type="binfile" enabled="yes" data="/media/mmc2/map/planet.bin"/>
</mapset> '

defeats me
can this all be done on the n800 or do i need to attach to a computer via usb to do it and what programs do i need to do this ?

or - should i just wait until its properly sorted and stable to just download and use without editing its structure? [how close is this ?]

if there was a step by step with 'primary school' instructions and what hardware/software to use id have a bash, but it seems very assuming of computer literacy.

im in the UK.

cheers

I'm not sure about the n800, I have the n810. I know it's possible on the n800 but it is supposed to be more complicated. The easiest way would be to copy the navit.xml file to a computer, edit it and then copy it back.

I did ask one of the developers if there was a plan to add an interface for changing settings. He said it is planned but it didn't seem like it would be anytime soon.

Personally I think Navit is getting stable enough and usable enough to be worth the setup pain. However many of the features that make it user friendly and a complete mapping solution are likely going to take some time before they show up.

i have a strange problem when i want to use garmin maps...
i tried with 3 different maps but nothing appeared in the screen, so i finaliy loaded the worldmap from garmin to get shure that i'm not pointing to coordinates with no data. my gps was always enabled and had a fix. so with the world map i found out that the map appears somewhere under any gps location ---> the world map is under my gps location. i took a screenshot that you know what i mean!
maybe someone can halp me with that problem!!!
OSM maps are working fine! but garmin would offer more outdoormapping for example hiking..... so i really want to use garmin!

I just wanted to make a few observations about Navit on my N800:

I have Navit up and running with the UK OSM map. It took some effort and fiddling, but now I have everything set up for easy tweaking (see my method below).

I am using an external GBS bluetooth (cheap Holox bought on eBay - fast and super easy to connect)

The map display speed is a little slow compared to dedicated GPS devices, but not bad at all.

MiniGPSD vs. Built-n GPSD
I have miniGPSD installed in addition to the built in GPSD - but although miniGPSD can easily connect to my BT GPS, Navit fails to recognise this connection and offers to start my built-in GPSD instead - which fails as miniGPSD is already connected - Reboot required to get everything working again! Much time wasted experimenting - finally given up with miniGPSD unless anyone can advise a way to configure this to work (alternative port to standard 2947 ??).

Navit starts and stops the built in GPSD just fine.

Flite
Flite works (with the much mentioned poor quality voice - but at least it works) - I already had Flite installed for Maemo Mapper, so just had to uncomment the flite line in navit.xml

Display
The OSD settings suggested by DWould on his blog are a good place to start, although his button for gui.fullscreen() does not work so have disabled it until I can work out what is wrong. Also - city and street text-sizes all need to be enlarged to 15 as a minimum to be visible at a reasonable scale.

Configuring and testing
The process of trying/editing/trying/editing was extremely tedious until I worked out a better way - copy navit.xml into a folder on mmc1 and use leafpad to edit it there. Set up Personal Menu to run Navit with the xml file as a parameter (navit /media/mmc1/Navit/navit.xml in my case). Create a link in Personal Menu to load the file into Leafpad for easy quick changes. Keeping the xml file on mc1 has the additional benefit of it being easy to pop the SD card into my desktop machine and load the xml file there for full large screen editing. This setup works for me - I may streamline a little more by using xml include statements and swapping out key areas of the file for specific edit tasks.

I run Navit with pitch=15 to give a moderate degree of 3D look-ahead, whilst keeping it finger flick friendly for punching in destinations.

Bugs - unfinished work
The destination entry system appears to be broken - or maybe my UK map simply lacks the correct annotations to allow me to enter place names with decent results. e.g. - I enter (very slowly to allow the db to keep up) in the City box: Dor (to search for Dorking) - 4 entries pop - tiddly little places show up - but definitely not Dorking. Hopeless.

And what are the Map, Bookmark, and Destination buttons supposed to mean? This has been mentioned before so I am only repeating my experiences.

Using my fingers to move around the map, I can bookmark places and these are then available to be set as destinations at any time - this works very well.

OSM maps
The level of detail on the UK OSM map is pretty amazing. Not as good as on my main car GPS, but not bad at all - I am impressed. It is certainly good enough for most of the journeys I make.

Finally...
All in all, I am blown away by this application and deeply grateful for the work that has gone in to get it to the state it is right now.
